Making Globalization Socially Sustainable

The International Labour Office (ILO) and the Secretariat of the World Trade Organization (WTO) have co-published the report “Making Globalization Socially Sustainable.” The volume consists of contributions by leading academic experts who analyze the various channels through which globalization affects jobs and wages.

The publication underlines globalization’s potential to stimulate productivity and growth but highlights the importance of pursuing trade, employment and social policies together to harness this potential.

The book is organized around three main themes: employment, uncertainty in the job market and inequality. Together, the nine chapters in this volume summarize state-of-the art knowledge on themes related to the social dimension of globalization.

World Trade Profile 2010

The World Trade Organization has just launched the report “Trade Profile 2010”. The study gives quick references on national and trade statistics of WTO members and countries which are in the process of negotiating WTO membership.

It combines information on trade flows and trade policy measures of members, WTO observers and other selected economies.

Benefits of Trade for Employment and Growth

The OECD, the International Labor Organization, The World Bank and the World Trade Organization presented to the government leaders at the G20 Summit in Seoul on November 11-12, 2010 a joint report titled “Seizing the Benefits of Trade for Employment and Growth”. The message is clear: open markets play a pivotal role in supporting growth and job creation. What is more, trade facilitates technological progress and the global spread of innovation.

In the near term, further trade opening can generate an additional stimulus that will create employment opportunities for the world as a whole. The study highlights the importance of complementary action at the national and international levels to facilitate adjustment and ensure that the benefits of trade are widely shared.
