Personal Introduction

Pablo Cardona is professor of the Department of Managing People in Organizations at IESE. He holds an MBA from IESE and a Ph.D. from UCLA. He has been a visiting professor at schools such as Harvard Business School and IAE in Argentina. He has written and contributed to several books and articles. He has published in international research journals and delivered presentations at various international management forums, such as the Academy of Management and the Strategic Management Conference. In 2003 his research was recognized as one of the top 10 non-U.S. papers in the Academy of Management. Moreover, one of his books was chosen as one of the top five most influential economic books in Spain by Capital Magazine (2002).

Prof. Cardona’s interests lie in the area of leadership, management development and cross-cultural research. He combines theoretical research with applied research, having done consulting for companies such as La Caixa, Volkswagen-Audi Spain, Danone, Sony and Abertis. He has also developed and coordinated in-company seminars in multinational organizations such as BBVA, Banco Santander, Telefónica, Nestlé, or Roche both in Spain and overseas.

Amongst his best known contributions are his theory of transcendental leadership (published in The Leadership and Organization Development Journal), his revolutionary management system, known as management by missions, and his new approach to leadership competencies. He focuses on managerial coaching as a means of helping managers in the highly personal process of developing leadership competencies.

Prof. Cardona has also played a leading role in creating an international network of researchers to promote cross-cultural research at IESE on various fields related to human behavior in organizations such as leadership, motivation, or trust. The network launched its activities with a first study about trust, organizational citizenship behavior and leadership competencies. The countries involved thus far are France, Ireland, Spain, Greece, Poland, Russia, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Brazil.

His consulting work focuses on management by missions, cultural change and how to develop leadership competencies in companies such as SONY, Volkswagen-Audi Spain, Roche and Danone. He has also developed and coordinated in-company seminars in organizations such as Abbot, BBVA, Telefónica, La Caixa, Nestlé or Roche, both in Spain and in other countries.
