Urban transport is one of the daily struggles. But I had it easy \u2013 my host Lagos Business School covered my needs. Afolabi, Henry, or another driver picked me up every day, took me to school and back, and drove me around to visit companies. I enjoyed the rides a lot: I learned a lot about people\u2019s lives talking to the drivers. I was able to observe what was going on in the street and share with locals the excitement of getting stuck in traffic for a couple of hours for a ride that could have taken just 20-30 minutes. This is nothing compared to what people go through on a daily basis there. Many people wake up at 4:00am to get to work on time. Many others live in their shops \u2013 not just to avoid traffic from lack of a better shelter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1314\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/10\/2014-07-05-09.10.22.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1314 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/10\/2014-07-05-09.10.22-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"New highways in the vicinity of Naoribi\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/10\/2014-07-05-09.10.22-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/10\/2014-07-05-09.10.22-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/10\/2014-07-05-09.10.22-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New highways in the vicinity of Naoribi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssatp.org\/en\/page\/urban-mobility-accessibility\" target=\"_blank\">Africa Transport Policy Program<\/a> (SSATP) provides figures (for all Africa) that give an idea of the scale of the problem:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It has a 4.5 % annual population growth rate;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There will be more than 300 million\u00a0city residents by 2030;<\/li>\n<li>60%\u00a0of\u00a0all Africans will live in cities by 2050;<\/li>\n<li>The population of Africa will reach 4 billion\u00a0by 2100.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Improved urban transport needs to accompany the growth of cities.<\/strong> Progress is being made. A few casual observations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economist.com\/news\/21665199-addis-ababa-has-opened-first-part-new-light-rail-system-sub-saharan-africa-gets-its-first-metro\" target=\"_blank\">first subway system in SSA<\/a> opened last month in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Highways are being built \u2013 the most impressive one to me is the one connecting Lagos Island to the airport: a 10 km construction built over water;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\/cities\" target=\"_blank\">Uber <\/a>operates in some large cities, alleviating traffic and improving safety.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You can\u00a0find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssatp.org\/en\/publication\/policies-sustainable-accessibility-and-mobility-urban-areas-africa\" target=\"_blank\">city reports<\/a> in the document <strong>\u201cPolicies for Sustainable Accessibility and Mobility in Urban Areas of Africa\u201d<\/strong> by SSATP. It claims the need to transform urban areas from obstacles to growth to engines of economic \u00a0\u2013 \u00a0and social, I would add \u2013 development and poverty alleviation. <strong>The objective is to improve mobility, accessibility, and quality of life for all.<\/strong> Hopefully, infrastructural development will be done in such a way that people aren\u2019t inundated with asphalt.
