{"id":1379,"date":"2015-12-09T13:00:12","date_gmt":"2015-12-09T12:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/?p=1379"},"modified":"2016-10-27T14:30:49","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T13:30:49","slug":"ethiopian-women-flying-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2015\/12\/09\/ethiopian-women-flying-high\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian Women Flying High"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Have you ever flown in a plane with an all-female crew?<\/strong> I know your answer: no \u2013 unless you flew from Addis Ababa to Bangkok with Ethiopian Airlines a couple of weeks ago. <strong>This was the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/ethiopian-airlines\" target=\"_blank\"> first time in the history of aviation that a flight has been operated by women only<\/a>,<\/strong> including cockpit, cabin crew, maintenance crew, and air traffic controllers. Wouoh!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1380\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/12\/2014-07-12-16.40.29.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1380 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/12\/2014-07-12-16.40.29-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Feminine genius has a lot to contribute to society\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/12\/2014-07-12-16.40.29-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/12\/2014-07-12-16.40.29-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/12\/2014-07-12-16.40.29-500x375.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Feminine genius has a lot to contribute to society<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This made me curious about Ethiopian women, so\u00a0I searched for some <a href=\"http:\/\/datatopics.worldbank.org\/gender\/country\/ethiopia\" target=\"_blank\">basic data<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary education completion rates (% of relevant age group): <strong>42% of Ethiopian girls complete primary education \u2013 compared to 65.9% across Sub-Saharan Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Seats held by women in the national parliaments: 28 % compared with 23% in SSA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I found the contrast interesting: <strong>While a lower proportion of Ethiopian girls than from other SSA countries complete primary education, more Ethiopian women participate in high-level national politics.<\/strong> And this made me curious about the country\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n<p>I went to\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/geert-hofstede.com\/about-us.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hofstede Center <\/a>website, and looked at Ethiopia\u2019s cultural traits. <strong>I wanted to know how the country scores in <a href=\"http:\/\/geert-hofstede.com\/national-culture.html\" target=\"_blank\">masculinity<\/a>: On a 1-100 scale, Ethiopia scores 65 \u2013 which is a relatively high score.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In Hofstede\u2019s parlance, the interpretation of the masculinity cultural dimension is that societies that score highly (masculine societies) are \u201cdriven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner \/ best in field.\u201d In contrast, in those scoring low (feminine societies) \u201cthe dominant values are caring for others and quality of life. A feminine society is one where quality of life is the sign of success and standing out from the crowd is not admirable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>It seems to me that a flight operated by women only stands out from the crowd.<\/strong> While unusual, I don\u2019t think this is either good or bad per se. If you know me, you will know that I\u2019m not a feminist. Rather, I\u2019m a humanist. Precisely because of this, I support whatever enhances authentic human progress. And I think that providing opportunities for anyone \u2013 female or male \u2013 to develop our capabilities and serve our societies while enjoying what we do is a sign of a healthy society.
