{"id":249,"date":"2014-04-02T13:00:31","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T12:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/?p=249"},"modified":"2016-10-28T15:37:10","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T14:37:10","slug":"pan-african-banks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/04\/02\/pan-african-banks\/","title":{"rendered":"Pan-African Banks: Turning Around a Bad Reputation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Unfortunately, when we think about <strong>Nigerian banks<\/strong>, what immediately comes to mind are those e-mails we&#8217;ve all received requesting a transfer to an obscure account. However, <b>not all Nigerian banks are alike<\/b>. Following a privatization and liberalization period, a process of <b>industry consolidation<\/b> started in 2005. A capital requirement was imposed of naira (<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">N<\/span>) 25 billion (about \u20ac 0.1 billion, or U.S. $ 0.15 billion). This left <b>25 solid institutions<\/b> alive, some of which decided to become <b>Pan-African banks<\/b>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_261\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-261\" style=\"width: 262px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/UBA-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-261  \" alt=\"UBA's e-banking services\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/UBA-1.jpg\" width=\"262\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UBA&#8217;s e-banking services<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b><a title=\"United Bank for Africa (UBA)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ubagroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Bank for Africa<\/a> <a title=\"United Bank for Africa (UBA)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ubagroup.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">(UBA)<\/a><\/b><b> is one of these Pan-African banks.<\/b> First, they became a dominant financial institution in Nigeria operating in all product and service segments. Now,<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fafrica%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F249%2F&text=+UBA+operates+in+19+African+countries+and+has+offices+in+New+York%2C+London%2C+and+Paris+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\"> UBA operates in 19 African countries and has offices in New York, London, and Paris <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b> The <b>rationale for this move:<\/b> to follow their international customers, and to tap the economic growth in selected African markets.<\/p>\n<p><b>Their next aspiration is to become a global bank<\/b>: Africa&#8217;s upcoming economic growth will make the continent increasingly interdependent across the board, enabling these transactions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255\" style=\"width: 138px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/Access-Bank.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-255    \" alt=\"Access Bank headquarters in Lagos\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/Access-Bank.jpg\" width=\"138\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/Access-Bank.jpg 370w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/Access-Bank-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 138px) 100vw, 138px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Access Bank headquarters in Lagos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong><a title=\"Access Bank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.accessbankplc.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Access Bank<\/a>, <a title=\"GTBank\" href=\"http:\/\/gtbank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">GTBank<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Zenith\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zenithbank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zenith<\/a> are also Pan-African banks<\/strong> of Nigerian origin. But some others come from different areas. For instance, <strong><a title=\"Standard Bank Group\" href=\"http:\/\/www.standardbank.com\/\">Standard Bank Group<\/a><\/strong> (also known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standardbank.com\/\">Stanbic Bank<\/a>) started in South Africa, and <strong><a title=\"Ecobank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ecobank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ecobank<\/a><\/strong> was born as West African.<\/p>\n<p>For Pan-African banks to<\/span> become global players,\u00a0they need (among other things) to <\/span> overcome some reputational issues<\/b>.\u00a0But they are working on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecobank.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ecobank<\/a><\/b>, for instance,\u00a0has been in the international press for close to a year in relation to <b>corporate governance scandals<\/b>, which practically led the bank to paralysis. This may have come to an end with the <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2014\/03\/11\/us-ecobank-idUSBREA2A1OQ20140311\" target=\"_blank\">removal of Ecobank&#8217;s CEO<\/a> last month<\/b><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fafrica%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F249%2F&text=Nigerian+banks+need+to+overcome+a+negative+country+image%2C+and+they+keep+working+at+preventing+fraud+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Nigerian banks need to overcome a negative country image, and they keep working at preventing fraud <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>.
