In one you&#8217;ll see the line<b> for a gas station<\/b>: it&#8217;s about two or so miles long, and as it gets closer to the station the line doubles. In the other picture, people wait at the station to fill plastic containers. <b>The average waiting time is 3 to 4 hours <\/b>\u2013 and yet this is not an infrequent situation. <b>How can it be so hard to get hold of oil in a country like Nigeria, which is <a title=\"Nigeria's development\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/02\/17\/nigerias-development\/\" target=\"_blank\">so rich in it<\/a>?<\/b><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_293\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-293\" style=\"width: 1690px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-293 \" alt=\"Two-miles gas queu\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161.jpg\" width=\"1690\" height=\"484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161.jpg 2817w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161-300x85.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161-1024x292.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/20140304_0749161-624x178.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1690px) 100vw, 1690px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-293\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two-miles gas queue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The answer is not a straightforward one: a number of factors contribute to the situation, including economic and political factors. <b>The price of oil is regulated<\/b>, and it&#8217;s used as a political weapon. That&#8217;s why <b>it&#8217;s subsidized<\/b>, and it&#8217;s sold at an artificially low price, much lower than in the international markets. To give you an idea, a liter of gas goes for <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through\">N<\/span> 97 at the retail station (\u20ac 0.43 or U.S. $ 0.59).<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The capacity of local refineries is not enoug<\/b><b>h<\/b> to supply oil to cover domestic demand, and <b>many are not even fully operational. <\/b>In addition, <b>the militia control the Delta area<\/b>, the main oil-producing zone in the country.<b><\/b><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 344px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/oil-scarcity.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Refilling gas containers (...to power electricity generators!)\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/04\/oil-scarcity.jpg\" width=\"344\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Refilling gas containers (&#8230;to power electricity generators!)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>Oil marketers have a license to import petroleum products<\/b>. Obviously, they pay the international price, but then <b>receive a governmental subsidy<\/b> to sell it at the regulated price. A part of this import, however, is often siphoned off \u2013 post subsidy \u2013 and sold on the international market at a higher price. In this sense, Lamido Sanusi, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.citifmonline.com\/?p=11167\">was last month suspended<\/a>\u00a0for blowing the whistle on \u20ac20bn of diverted oil revenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isn&#8217;t it amazing that Nigerians can&#8217;t enjoy their own natural resources?<\/strong> I don&#8217;t intent to offer a full explanation for why Nigerian queue to get gas but I hope to have provided a feeling for what the situation is like.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Look at the pictures below.
