Yet, no matter how tough, you can succeed if you have an <b>&#8220;in-spite-of&#8221; attitude<\/b>. This is the experience of Nigerian <b>entrepreneur Austin Okere, <\/b>whose example illustrates<b> <\/b>this necessary attitude for doing business in Africa.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-114\" style=\"width: 294px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwlgroup.com\/gallery-25\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114  \" alt=\"ng 2\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/02\/ng-2.jpg\" width=\"294\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ginni Rometty \u2013 IBM President and CEO \u2013 with Austin Okere. Source: CWG<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Austin started <b>Computer Warehouse Group<\/b>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwlgroup.com\/index\" target=\"_blank\">CWG<\/a>) in 1992 as a reseller of computer equipment. About <b>20 years later<\/b>, CGW was selling hardware, software, and communication systems, generating an income of<b> $130 million <\/b>and employing <b>650 people<\/b>. From Nigeria, it had expanded into\u00a0<b>Ghana, Cameroon, and Uganda<\/b>. And they&#8217;ve received numerous awards, as you can see in the picture!<\/p>\n<p>But in 2010 CWG faced a <b>serious setback:<\/b> \u00a0The\u00a0Central Bank of Nigeria discontinued the deployment of ATMs outside bank branches, and CWG&#8217;s\u00a0ATM sales went <b>from $35 million to $0<\/b>. They \u201cfell off a cliff,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0in Austin&#8217;s words. The company was about to be dissolved. However, in 2014 CWG is getting ready to be listed in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nse.com.ng\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Nigerian Stock Exchange<\/a>. And the\u00a0<b>&#8220;in-spite-of&#8221; attitude <\/b>Austin has instilled in CWG shares an important part in this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In spite of having\u00a0<b>lost<\/b>\u00a0from night to dawn their<b>\u00a0flourishing ATM infrastructure business;<\/b><\/li>\n<li>In spite of\u00a0<b>paying Nigerian taxes<\/b>, while\u00a0many of its foreign competitors were tax-exempt as they were considered \u201cpioneer companies in\u00a0communications;\u201d<\/li>\n<li>In spite of having faced a <b>jump in interest rates<\/b> from 8% to 25% after the 2009 crisis;<\/li>\n<li>In spite of <b>dramatic margin cuts<\/b> from 2009 to 2012&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8230;CGW was able to <b>shift their strategy<\/b> and corresponding business model from that of a provider of IT to an enabler of IT operating in the world of cloud computing.\u00a0(Their next project is called<b> CWG2.0<\/b> and it&#8217;s built around a subscription-based model, but that is a topic for another day.)<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/02\/CWG-awards.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CWG awards\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/02\/CWG-awards-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">CWG awards<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>What if we also embrace the &#8220;in-spite-of&#8221; attitude?<\/b> Maybe it&#8217;s about time to stop complaining about the difficulties posed by the current environment, think of new projects, and start by taking one small step forward that will lead us to a big dream.<\/p>\n<p>By the way, Austin Okere holds an Executive MBA degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbs.edu.ng\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lagos Business School<\/a>, which at the time was conducting the program on behalf of IESE Business School.\u00a0I met him at an Alumni session at Lagos Business School, and later I interviewed him and his management team in relation to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/about-me\/\" target=\"_blank\">Africa-to-Africa project<\/a> I&#8217;m working on.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t most of us have a perception that African countries are a tough environment for business?
