It was hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strathmore.edu\/en\/faculties-and-schools\/strathmore-business-school\">Strathmore Business School<\/a> here in Nairobi. I had the opportunity to talk about <strong>IESE&#8217;s Africa Initiative<\/strong>. Well trained business leaders who manage their companies <strong>taking into account both the economic and the social dimensions<\/strong> will have a positive impact on the social and economic development of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Given Africa&#8217;s expected future growth, some estimations by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.africanmanagers.org\/what-do-we-do\">African Management Initiative<\/a> Report indicate an <strong>urgent need to train 1 M managers!<\/strong> <strong>How does IESE contribute to this effort?<\/strong> Basically, in <strong>three ways:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Training faculty<\/strong> of African Business Schools through the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/international-faculty-program\/\">International Faculty Program<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/phd-management\/\">Ph.D. Program<\/a>;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Supporting our Associated Schools<\/strong> in Africa (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbs.edu.ng\/\">LBS<\/a> in Nigeria, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mde.ci\/\">MDE<\/a> in Ivory Coast, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strathmore.edu\/en\/faculties-and-schools\/strathmore-business-school\">SBS<\/a> in Kenya, <a href=\"http:\/\/asm.co.ao\/\">ASM<\/a> in Angola) through participation in advisory committees, and by opening our doors to their administrators for experience exchange;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engaging directly in training managers:<\/strong> participants in their AMP and EMBA programs come for a week at IESE, and IESE faculty may teach short courses in those schools.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-403\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-403 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/05\/20140519_122035-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Panelists at the AABS conference\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/05\/20140519_122035-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/05\/20140519_122035-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/05\/20140519_122035-624x467.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panelists at the AABS conference<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But this is not a one-way route: <strong>IESE also benefits from these relationships.<\/strong> For instance, in collaboration with SBS, our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/mba\/\">MBA program<\/a> offers a <strong>course on Doing Business in Africa<\/strong> that allows our students to gain exposure to the African business context. Through the schools&#8217; local connections, IESE faculty may gain access to African companies opening the possibility to engage in <strong>new research projects related to Africa,<\/strong> and to write <strong>teaching cases<\/strong> that enrich our own programs by bringing into the classroom the African context.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, <strong>I&#8217;m a direct beneficiary of these relationships.<\/strong> Both <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbs.edu.ng\/\">LBS<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.strathmore.edu\/en\/faculties-and-schools\/strathmore-business-school\">SBS<\/a>\u00a0are great hosts for me in my sabbatical months. I wouldn&#8217;t have been able to do the work I&#8217;m doing here without their welcoming and support.<\/p>\n<p>This week I have a parenthesis in my sabbatical: I came back to Barcelona to teach in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/global-executive-mba\/\">Global Executive MBA program<\/a>.
