{"id":673,"date":"2014-11-12T13:00:12","date_gmt":"2014-11-12T12:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/?p=673"},"modified":"2016-10-28T13:48:51","modified_gmt":"2016-10-28T12:48:51","slug":"talent-development-and-african-values","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/11\/12\/talent-development-and-african-values\/","title":{"rendered":"Talent development and African values"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I attended a <strong>conference of business school administrators<\/strong> hosted by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/\">IESE Business School<\/a>. The theme was <strong>&#8220;Quality in context: Management education for the developing world,&#8221;<\/strong> and the focus was on Africa. In one of the panels, a leader from one of the most prominent MNCs, which has operations in 13 African countries, highlighted <strong>finding talent<\/strong> as <strong>one of the most important challenges <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/10\/01\/doing-business-in-africa-some-practical-advice\/\">to doing business in Africa<\/a><\/strong> (my apologies for putting all of Africa in one big basket \u2013 big mistake, I know! But I think the generalization is not that serious in this case.) His point was that <strong>even if important, technical skills are secondary as they can be easily trained<\/strong>. In his words, <strong>&#8220;the most important part is the humanistic component.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_676\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-676\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/11\/2014-05-04-16.32.431.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-676\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/11\/2014-05-04-16.32.431-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Connection to the family: an important African value\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/11\/2014-05-04-16.32.431-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/11\/2014-05-04-16.32.431-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2014\/11\/2014-05-04-16.32.431-624x467.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-676\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Connection to the family: an important African value<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to him, <strong>specific African values<\/strong> that need to be taken into account to manage operations in Africa (and \u2013 I would add \u2013 from which we all can learn) include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>respect for old people<\/strong> as they have experience and can contribute a valuable perspective. In contrast, many in the Western world have forgotten this: by classifying them as &#8220;useless&#8221; we miss an important source of advice; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/02\/26\/africans-communal-mentality\/\">strong sense of community<\/a><\/strong>, particularly the connection to the family.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another panelist stressed some <strong>soft skills that Africans may need to develop<\/strong> as they become increasingly connected to a global business community:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>overcoming <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/06\/18\/tribal-attributes\/\">tribal issues:<\/a> <\/strong>in today&#8217;s world, you can&#8217;t have a business just for your tribe; and<\/li>\n<li><strong>becoming aware that time has a different meaning in different parts of the world<\/strong> (although I think we all need some training in this!).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Those of you more familiar with the African context(s): what do you think? <strong>Any perspective on these points you&#8217;d like to share?
