That much we knew.<\/p>\n<p>What I didn&#8217;t know is that <strong>Africans are also migrating to China<\/strong>, according to articles in <a title=\"The Africa Report\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theafricareport.com\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Africa Report<\/em><\/a>. According to my (Chinese and African) interviewees in Ghana and Kenya, <strong>cultural differences are huge<\/strong>. To name a few \u2013 at the risk of over\u00a0generalization:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Chinese go to Africa ready to work 6.5 days\/week; Africans want to dedicate time to other pursuits (e.g., family life, religious practices);<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese stick to deadlines strictly; Africans may not;<\/li>\n<li>The Chinese focus on profit-making at the expense of overall development; Africans have a broad perspective; they are interested in the<a title=\"Africans' Communal Mentality\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/02\/26\/africans-communal-mentality\" target=\"_blank\"> socioeconomic development of their community<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>How did these differences evolve? Where do they come from? To find out I went to an expert source: <a title=\"The Hofstede Center\" href=\"http:\/\/geert-hofstede.com\/the-hofstede-centre.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Hofstede center<\/a>. It scores countries on a number of cultural dimensions (meanings below graph). Take a look at the scores for China, Ghana, and Kenya:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_844\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-844\" style=\"width: 439px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/02\/graph2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-844\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/02\/graph2-300x158.png\" alt=\"Source: The Hofstede Center\" width=\"439\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/02\/graph2-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/02\/graph2-624x328.png 624w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/02\/graph2.png 732w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 439px) 100vw, 439px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-844\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: The Hofstede Center<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanings of the cultural dimensions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Power distance<\/strong>: the extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Individualism<\/strong>: the degree of interdependence a society maintains among its members;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Masculinity<\/strong>: the extent to which a society is driven by competition, achievement and success, with success being defined by the winner \/ best in field;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uncertainty avoidance<\/strong>: The extent to which the members of a culture feel threatened by ambiguous or unknown situations and have created beliefs and institutions that try to avoid these;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pragmatism<\/strong>: extent to which a society adapts its past traditions to deal with the challenges of the present and future;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indulgence<\/strong>: the extent to which people try to control their desires and impulses (high score = weak control = indulgence; low score = high control = restraint).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The most striking differences are pragmatism and indulgence<\/strong> (unfortunately, not listed for Kenya).
