That was one of the first conclusions I reached after a few weeks in Lagos. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t thinking just in terms of the age of the population, more in terms of the spirit and outlook I saw there. <strong>Africans are bursting with youth and energy<\/strong> which is why I delighted in the news I read a few days ago about <strong>a <a title=\"92-year-old elementary school student\" href=\"\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/03\/02\/africa\/kenya-oldest-student\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">92-year-old Kenyan lady<\/a> who is going to elementary school.<\/strong> It is a clear sign of the youthful spirit of African people. <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fafrica%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F910%2F&text=In+business%2C+both+demographic+and+mental+youthfulness+are+highly+valuable+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">In business, both demographic and mental youthfulness are highly valuable <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_911\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-911\" style=\"width: 744px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/03\/2014-07-12-11.32.54.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-911\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/files\/2015\/03\/2014-07-12-11.32.54-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Youthfulness (my favorite picture from Nairobi)\" width=\"744\" height=\"558\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-911\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Youthfulness (my favorite picture from Nairobi)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>(1) Some interesting <strong>demographics for sub-Saharan Africa<\/strong>:*<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>-total population: 940 million in 2013<\/strong>, up from 270 million in 2000; and it is estimated to reach 1 billion in 2030, and <strong>1.75 billion in 2040<\/strong>; (see related post on <a title=\"Increasing urbanization\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2014\/12\/10\/increasing-urbanization-and-smart-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increasing urbanization<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>-75% of the population is under 35<\/strong>, which is estimated to drop to 70% by 2030 (these figures include North Africa);<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-life expectancy has increased from 49.5 in 2000 to 55 in 2013, and it is expected to reach 64 by 2030;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">-the population growth rate is forecast at 2.6% until 2020 and 2.2% from 2030 onward;<\/p>\n<p>(2) <strong>Some of the signs of a youthful mentality<\/strong> that I saw while visiting Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>-Africans\u00a0are eager to take their countries to the next level:<\/strong> with this purpose in mind, a number of initiatives (e.g., <a title=\"Africa 2.0\" href=\"http:\/\/africa2point0.org\/%20africa\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa 2.0<\/a>; <a title=\"African leadership initiative\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aspeninstitute.org\/leadership-programs\/africa-leadership-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Africa Leadership Network<\/a>) focus on developing the next generation of African leaders;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>-Africans\u00a0are <a title=\"Indigenous entrepeneurship\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/africa\/2015\/01\/14\/a-new-era-of-indigenous-entrepreneurship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extremely entrepreneurial<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 especially Nigerians, I would say: even drivers are constantly thinking of what business they might start up;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fafrica%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F910%2F&text=An+%E2%80%9Cin-spite-of%E2%80%9D+attitude+pushes%A0Africans%A0to+persist+in+the+face+of+manifold+obstacles+in%A0a+tough+environment.+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">an &#8220;in-spite-of&#8221;
