The UN Development Program (UNDP) has published the Human Development Report 2009 for the Russian Federation, “Energy Sector and Sustainable Development”. The study shows how Russia needs to shift its focus towards achieving the goal of energy efficiency.
The current economic recession provides new opportunities for the creation and implementation of new approaches to development, including the transformation of the energy sector – most of which was built in the second half of the 20th century – into a modern, safe, high-tech industry. The report contributes to the discussion of post-crisis development and provides a deeper understanding of the role of the energy sector in Russia’s socio-economic development.
