Amazon boss Jeff Bezos is the World’s Top-Performing CEO, followed by John Martin of Gilead Sciences and John Chambers of Cisco Systems in second and third position respectively. Pablo Isla Álvarez de Tejera of Inditex is the highest ranked Spaniard, in 14th place.
To come up with the list, HBR’s number crunchers sorted through 832 current CEOs from the S&P Global 1200. They then calculated daily company returns for each CEO from the first day that he or she took office through April 30, 2014.
The Harvard Business Review list is based on each company’s financial performance during the CEO’s tenure, specifically total shareholder returns and market capitalization. It acknowledges that while being a good CEO is about much more than just investment performance, it is more difficult to quantify attributes like reputation, employee satisfaction and customer engagement.
