Without allied support, U.S. President Barak Obama can not threaten military action because he will then look too much like his predecessor George W. Her organization, <a href=\"http:\/\/globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/20\/dont-forget-about-venezuela\/\">CNN<\/a>, still has a team in Caracas.<\/p>\n<p><b>33 deaths so far<\/b><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-26699367\">BBC<\/a>, at least\u00a0<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fdoing-business%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F1015%2F&text=33+people+have+been+killed+so+far+in+the+protests+against+Nicolas+Maduro%E2%80%98s+government+and+two+were+killed+this+weekend.+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">33 people have been killed so far in the protests against Nicolas Maduro&#8216;s government and two were killed this weekend. <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For those of you who have not managed to follow the events, Hugo Chavez died about a year ago and hand picked Nicolas Maduro to replace him. After first being interim president, Maduro threw the entire state apparatus and controlled media behind his candidacy and still beat opposition candidate Henrique Capriles by only 1.5 % in the official, but highly contested, vote on April 14th last year.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile\u00a0<strong>Maduro&#8217;s government has proven to be a disaster<\/strong> and the country has seen a complete breakdown in law and order, hyperinflation and economic collapse, and an increasingly repressive regime.<\/p>\n<iframe class='xavier' width='100%' height='400' frameborder='0' allow='fullscreen' allowfullscreen src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/EFS6cP9auDc'><\/iframe>\n<p>Last month, students organized nationwide protests against the deteriorating situation and the Maduro government, like Yanukovitch\u2019s government in Kiev, responded with brutal repression by security forces and armed groups of masked gunmen turning the conflict increasingly violent and deadly.<\/p>\n<h3><b>A question of leadership?<\/b><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1019\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1019\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/Leopoldo-Lopez-Noticias-Caracas-8-320x213.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1019\" alt=\"runrun.es\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/Leopoldo-Lopez-Noticias-Caracas-8-320x213-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">runrun.es<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It seems that within the political opposition in Venezuela, Leopoldo Lopez, the former mayor of Chacao (Caracas) agreed to support Capriles for the sake of unity but that he was frustrated by Capriles&#8217; reluctance to mobilize the population and took to the streets himself in support of the students causing the government to put out a warrant for his arrest.<\/p>\n<p>Saying that he will give himself up to an \u201cunjust justice\u201d and hoping that his arrest would serve to \u201cawaken the people\u201d Lopez <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elmundo.es\/internacional\/2014\/02\/18\/530399ab268e3e73528b4580.html\">gave himself up<\/a> the authorities and is reportedly being held in a military prison.<\/p>\n<h3><b>So what&#8217;s next?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>The parallels to Ukraine are not only powerful but also frightening.<\/p>\n<p>Yanukovitch, of course, fled to Russia when he saw that his situation was untenable but the problem is where can Maduro go and what about the agents of his repressive government?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1020\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/PDVSA-B.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1020 \" alt=\"alexanderguerrero.com\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/PDVSA-B-300x224.jpg\" width=\"210\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/PDVSA-B-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/03\/PDVSA-B.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 210px) 100vw, 210px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">alexanderguerrero.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Venezuela, has, according to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/2014-01-30\/venezuela-oil-exports-to-u-s-hit-lowest-rate-since-1985.html\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/em>, the world\u2019s largest oil reserves and while mismanagement and commitments to China and India has reduced its shipments to the U.S. to the lowest point since 1985, it is still 792,000 bbl\/day. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/alexanderguerrero.com\/muestras.php?id=91#.Uy8P8K1dVri\">Alexander Guerrero<\/a>, a Venezuelan economist, the national oil company PDSVA is \u00a0a disaster and needs a complete restructuring.<\/p>\n<p>The issue is who will save Venezuela?
