{"id":1090,"date":"2014-04-21T09:32:27","date_gmt":"2014-04-21T08:32:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=1090"},"modified":"2014-04-28T11:55:27","modified_gmt":"2014-04-28T10:55:27","slug":"electric-cars-are-moving-fast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2014\/04\/21\/electric-cars-are-moving-fast\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric cars are moving fast!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you have been following this blog for the last six months, you will have seen a number of entries about <strong>electric cars<\/strong> and <strong>plug-in hybrids<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Last week\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2014\/04\/14\/the-increasingly-political-climate-circus-ipcc\/#sthash.dyWFh2QI.dpbs\">post<\/a> referred to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change\u2019s (IPCC) new report which called for sharply lowering the carbon footprint of electricity generation, transportation, buildings, and Industry as an urgent necessity if we, as a planet, still have any hope of limiting the effect of climate change in the next 50 to 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>While a number of steps can be taken to generate electricity with a lower carbon footprint, only electric and plug-in hybrid cars offer the possibility of translating these improvements to the transportation sector.<\/p>\n<h3><b>So whats new?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1094\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/images-e1398246169799.jpg\" alt=\"Source: www.autoblog.com\" width=\"250\" height=\"145\" \/><\/b>For me the most surprising development has been BMW\u2019s entry into the electric vehicle market. BMW had shown the i8 concept car back in 2008 but I have always thought that BMW\u2019s brand, which is all about engines and driving pleasure was inconsistent with electric vehicles and did not expect them to develop the car.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; color: #444444; font-size: 1rem;\">Instead, BMW has launched two vehicles in the space, the almost all <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmw.com\/com\/en\/newvehicles\/i\/i3\/2013\/showroom\/drive.html\">electric i3<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; color: #444444; font-size: 1rem;\"> and the <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bmw.com\/com\/en\/newvehicles\/i\/i8\/2014\/showroom\/index.html\">plug-in hybrid i8<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; color: #444444; font-size: 1rem;\">! The i3 is $42,000 electric vehicle but for about $4,000 more you can get a range extender package which adds a small engine which doubles the range of the car making it a series hybrid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Also this week a number of electrics were launched at the Beijing Car Show\u00a0including the Tang, an SUV from BYD; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/cars\/volvo-s60l-petrol-plug-in-hybrid-concept-photos-details-and-specs\/\">V60 plug-in hybrid<\/a> from Volvo cars which is owned by China\u2019s Geely; and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinacartimes.com\/2013\/12\/nissan-leaf-china-market-launch-april-2014\/\">Nissan Leaf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1093\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1093\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1093 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/byd-tang-china-4-660x467-e1398245655468.jpg\" alt=\"BYD Tang\" width=\"200\" height=\"141\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1093\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BYD Tang<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the show, Daimler <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/news\/articles\/SB10001424052702304049904579513462112803236?mg=reno64-wsj&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fonline.wsj.com%2Farticle%2FSB10001424052702304049904579513462112803236.html\">announced<\/a> a new joint venture with China\u2019s BYD to launch the all electric Denza, despite the fact that their main play in China is with another partner (BAIC) and Rover AG announced the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2014\/04\/17\/mg-dynamo-ev\/\">Dynamo<\/a>, \u00a0an all electric concept car designed by its parent company SAIC in China.<span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0Tesla Motors, whose stock climbed above $250 last month, has also announced that the Tesla S will be available in China this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>An interesting counterpoint to the trend appears to be General Motors which despite announcing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/finance?q=NASDAQ:TSLA\">joint venture with SAIC<\/a> to do just that in 2012, spoke this week about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autonews.com\/article\/20140420\/GLOBAL03\/140429998\/gm-to-pump-12-billion-into-china-hike-capacity-65\">$12 Billion investment<\/a> to boost capacity and to push the Cadillac brand!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1095\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1095\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1095\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/imgres2.jpg\" alt=\"www.autoblog.com\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1095\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: www.autoblog.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All of this activity might be an indication that the combination of advances in lithium-ion battery technology with genuine concerns of both local pollution and climate change are finally pushing electric cars over the tipping point.<\/p>\n<p>More likely is that many carmakers are doing what they always do which is to hedge their bets on electric vehicle technology and be ready in case the market ever gets going.<\/p>\n<p>In China, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/757706ce-c836-11e3-ad74-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2zSuubD2I\">FT<\/a> questions to what degree the Chinese government is serious about its pledge to get half a million electric cars and\/or plug-ins on the road by 2015.<\/p>\n<p>In my view, the combination of low cost electric cars for China with high end Teslas and BMWs could finally get things charged up!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BMW&#8217;s entry into the electric car and plug-in hybrid space together with an enormous amount of activity in China may indicate the coming of age of electric vehicles &#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":788,"featured_media":1097,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[419,40364,588],"tags":[90129,182,90123,90127],"class_list":["post-1090","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-climate-change","category-electric-cars","category-energy","tag-air-pollution","tag-china","tag-climate-change","tag-electric-cars"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1090","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/788"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1090"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1090\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1104,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1090\/revisions\/1104"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/1097"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1090"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1090"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1090"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
