{"id":1112,"date":"2014-04-28T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2014-04-28T08:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=1112"},"modified":"2014-04-28T16:52:23","modified_gmt":"2014-04-28T15:52:23","slug":"re-inventing-fire-some-for-hope-for-the-us-china-and-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2014\/04\/28\/re-inventing-fire-some-for-hope-for-the-us-china-and-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Re-Inventing Fire: some for hope for the US, China, and the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Two weeks ago I wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2014\/04\/14\/the-increasingly-political-climate-circus-ipcc\/#sthash.aI9QkD8M.xdmn7NTY.dpbs\">post<\/a> concerning\u00a0IPCC\u2019s fifth climate assessment and expressed some concern that we, as a global society, would ever get on track in terms of reducing our carbon footprint and avoiding significant, and potentially devastating climate change some time in the future.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1117\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/jules_kortenhorst_staff_image.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1117\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/jules_kortenhorst_staff_image-150x150.png\" alt=\"Jules Kortenhorst\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jules Kortenhorst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last week, I had the pleasure to visit my friend <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\/Robert+Hutchinson\">Hutch Hutchinson<\/a> at the <a title=\"Rocky Mountain Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rocky Mountain Institute<\/strong><\/a> (RMI) in Boulder, Colorado, and after speaking with him and RMI&#8217;s new CEO, <a title=\"Jules Kortenhorst\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\/jules_kortenhorst\" target=\"_blank\">Jules Kortenhorst<\/a>, I feel a bit more hopeful about the future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Lorenzo Massa, an IESE PhD who lectures at the\u00a0<em><a title=\"\u00c9cole polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne\" href=\"http:\/\/www.epfl.ch\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u00c9cole polytechnique f\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(EPFL),\u00a0and I wrote two cases studies about RMI and one of them, <a title=\"Make Ideas Real\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iesep.com\/en\/the-rocky-mountain-institute-making-ideas-real-87786.html\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Making Ideas Real<\/i><\/a>, looked at the question of whether RMI should expand outside of the United States. One of the reasons to drop in was to learn more about its new Program extending\u00a0<strong>Re-inventing Fire to China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><strong>Re-Inventing Fire<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">RMI and its founder and Chief Scientist, <a title=\"Amory Lovins, Rocky Mountain Institute\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\/Amory+B.+Lovins\" target=\"_blank\">Amory Lovins<\/a>, have been pioneers in developing <strong>sustainable ideas<\/strong> since 1982. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\/reinventingfire\"><strong>Re-Inventing Fire<\/strong><\/a> is the result of a large research program which has developed a detailed road map to move the United States to a <strong>low carbon economy<\/strong> by 2050 and is based on looking at applying existing technology to transportation, buildings, industry and electricity generation. One of the essential ideas is that we can become much, much more efficient in using energy without compromising our quality of life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/Energy_consumption_in_US_economy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1114\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/Energy_consumption_in_US_economy.jpg\" alt=\"Energy_consumption_in_US_economy\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/Energy_consumption_in_US_economy.jpg 800w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/Energy_consumption_in_US_economy-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/04\/Energy_consumption_in_US_economy-624x351.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Back in 2012, the compelling logic was that it was important to first get the U.S. on a sustainable development path and then perhaps the rest of the world will follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p2\"><strong>China<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since then the RMI has decided to open up to the world and\u00a0<strong><a title=\"Re-Inventing Fire China\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rmi.org\/reinventing_fire_china\" target=\"_blank\">Re-Inventing Fire China<\/a><\/strong> is a major step.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">RMI is working in China\u00a0with a uniquely qualified consortia which includes\u00a0a team from <a href=\"http:\/\/china.lbl.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawrence Livermore Laboratory<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.efchina.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Foundation<\/a> which has 50 people on the ground in Beijing and China\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ec2.org.cn\/en\/about-us\/partners\/erindrc-energy-research-institute-national-development-and-reform-commission\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Institute<\/a>, which apparently has excellent links with the Chinese Leadership. The idea is replicate the Re-inventing Fire methodology but using Chinese data. Logically, the blueprint for China will be different than that of the US since China\u2019s starting point is different.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The people at RMI are optimistic that\u00a0the recommendations of the project , which focus specifically on electric transportation (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2014\/04\/21\/electric-cars-are-moving-fast\/#sthash.x3qSMe3V.dpbs\">see last week&#8217;s post<\/a>), building efficiency and power generation will be included in China\u2019s next 5 year plan and believe that China can leapfrog the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Time for solutions<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In addition to the new initiative in China, RMI\u2019s appointment of Jules Kortenhorst, from Holland as CEO, is a tremendous step.
