{"id":1808,"date":"2015-03-02T09:00:08","date_gmt":"2015-03-02T08:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=1808"},"modified":"2015-04-14T08:21:40","modified_gmt":"2015-04-14T07:21:40","slug":"energy-responsibility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2015\/03\/02\/energy-responsibility\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy &amp; Responsibility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The theme of<\/strong> <strong>this year&#8217;s Doing Good Doing Well conference was responsible business<\/strong> and, as happens every year, I was blown away by the commitment and passion of IESE&#8217;s MBA students who have been running this conference since 2001.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/1658430_295424713945021_1790297165_o-600x399.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1815\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/1658430_295424713945021_1790297165_o-600x399.jpg\" alt=\"1658430_295424713945021_1790297165_o-600x399\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/1658430_295424713945021_1790297165_o-600x399.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/1658430_295424713945021_1790297165_o-600x399-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One\u00a0interesting aspect of this event is that each year interested first year students help out with logistics and organization\u00a0and then some of them move on to take <strong>leading roles<\/strong> in next year&#8217;s conference and set its goals, directions and topics.<\/p>\n<p>I actually took part in\u00a0the discussion of the students who put together the first conference 15\u00a0years ago and am amazed that the title has been broad enough to cover the different topics that have come up as the focus over all these years. <strong>This year, the conference chair and her team chose Responsible\u00a0Business as the overall theme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Responsible Business<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The question is <strong>what is a responsible business?<\/strong> <strong>Do responsible companies do business with tyrants and Mafia states<\/strong> as discussed in last week&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2015\/02\/22\/daniel-duquenal-and-the-end-of-ideology\/\">post<\/a> concerning Venezuela? <strong>Are they committed to environmental sustainability and social justice?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the topic received \u00a0a number of different responses from very different people in terms of environmental sustainability perhaps the sharpest contrast was provided by\u00a0<a title=\"Jo Confino - The Guardian\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/profile\/joconfino\" target=\"_blank\">Jo Confino<\/a>,\u00a0chairman and editorial director of Guardian Sustainable Business and\u00a0<strong>Todd Onderdonk<\/strong>,\u00a0Senior Energy Advisor in <a title=\"ExxonMobil\" href=\"http:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\" target=\"_blank\">ExxonMobil<\/a>\u2019s Corporate Strategic Planning Department.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately the two did not actually coincide on the same panel but their\u00a0contrasting views are worth taking the time to repeat.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The view from the Media<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_938\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-938\" style=\"width: 118px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/02\/imgres.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-938\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2014\/02\/imgres.jpg\" alt=\"Jo Confino\" width=\"118\" height=\"177\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-938\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jo Confino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I had Jo Confino on a panel together with one of the <em><a title=\"New York Times\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\" target=\"_blank\">New York Time<\/a><\/em>&#8216;s most interesting reporters,\u00a0<strong>Chris Schuetze<\/strong>. For Chris, a responsible business was one which looked ahead 50 or even 100 years and took care to balance the needs of the firm with that of society. Jo went even further and spoke about what I would call post industrial ethics and spirituality. For him <strong>the issue of climate change threatens the human race and thus any and all measures need to be taken to sharply reduce our carbon footprint<\/strong>. In a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/2015\/feb\/06\/why-barclays-must-quit-bankrolling-coal-industry\">column<\/a> he recently blasted Barclays for continuing to provide financing\u00a0for the coal industry which he feels should be encouraged to disappear!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The view from ExxonMobile<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1814\" style=\"width: 146px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-01-at-23.30.44.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1814\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-01-at-23.30.44.png\" alt=\"Todd Onderdonk\" width=\"146\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Todd Onderdonk<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/Screen-Shot-2015-03-01-at-23.30.44.png\">Todd Onderdonk<\/a>\u00a0has been with Exxon for 35 years and is the lead author of its report <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/corporate.exxonmobil.com\/en\/energy\/energy-outlook\">The Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>which he presented to the conference. <strong>For Onderdonk, Exxon Mobile is a responsible\u00a0business because it strives to provide its customers with the energy they need to run their life <\/strong>and works to do that in the most environmentally friendly and socially progressive way that it can.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Outlook<\/strong> goes through reasonable assumptions about economic growth and population in different parts of the world and comes up with a picture of how the needs and supply of energy will play out over the next forty years. One\u00a0of the assumptions is that <strong>there will eventually be a cost of carbon of about $60\/ton which will incentivize increased energy efficiency<\/strong> and the development of renewables. The other is that <strong>emerging economies such as India and China will rely heavily on fossil fuels for significant parts of their growing energy needs<\/strong> without which they will not be able to bring economic prosperity to their people.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>No Middle Ground<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/dec11-eleven-degrees21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1820\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/dec11-eleven-degrees21-300x183.jpg\" alt=\"dec11-eleven-degrees21\" width=\"300\" height=\"183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/dec11-eleven-degrees21-300x183.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/03\/dec11-eleven-degrees21.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>From the point of view of\u00a0an environmentalist like Jo, Exxon&#8217;s argument is simply invalid as the idea that we should burn so much\u00a0fossil fuels is unacceptable. <em>The Guardian<\/em> recently published an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2015\/jan\/07\/much-worlds-fossil-fuel-reserve-must-stay-buried-prevent-climate-change-study-says\">article<\/a> which cites a report indicating that about 2\/3 of known reserves should be left in the ground to avoid a devastating 6 degree increase in world temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>Exxon would say that they and their competitors represent less than 15% of the global oil and gas industry and that India and China will do what they need to do for their societies in any case.
