{"id":2284,"date":"2015-09-21T10:54:58","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T09:54:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=2284"},"modified":"2015-11-30T12:46:18","modified_gmt":"2015-11-30T11:46:18","slug":"gazing-at-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2015\/09\/21\/gazing-at-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking about the world and its future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend I had the privilege to join my colleague <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/research\/stocks\/private\/person.asp?personId=154026&amp;privcapId=154002\">Pedro Nueno<\/a> at a meeting of a select group of very successful entrepreneurs from all over the world, and was so impressed by their collective understanding of the future that I thought I would share some of the highlights in this week&#8217;s post.<\/p>\n<p>Pedro invited me\u00a0to share the key ideas of my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palgrave.com\/page\/detail\/strategy-and-sustainability-michael-rosenberg\/?isb=9781137501738\">new book<\/a> on the connection between business strategy and environmental sustainability which will be available next week, but was also allowed to listen to the group&#8217;s deliberations on global risks and the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The members of the group discussed a number of risks including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2287\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2287\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalwarmingart.com\/wiki\/Global_Warming_Art:About\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2287\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/images.png\" alt=\"Global Warming Art\" width=\"310\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Global Warming Art<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The world&#8217;s population which is heading towards 9 billion people or more and the\u00a0challenge of job creation<\/li>\n<li>The stress that population is placing on the world&#8217;s resource base and natural environment including climate change<\/li>\n<li>The global nature of the world&#8217;s problems and the lack of global institutions which are able to deal with them<\/li>\n<li>A democratic deficit in the western democracies including the European Union and, as discussed <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2015\/09\/14\/voter-turnout-and-devisive-politics\/\">last week<\/a>, low voter turnout<\/li>\n<li>Demographic pressure including mass migration and the ageing of the population<\/li>\n<li>Geopolitical risks and the role of terrorism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the heart of the discussion on risks was the idea that many societies may not be resilient enough to prosper or even survive some the big changes which are bound to happen over the\u00a0next 20-30 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Future<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2289\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2015\/09\/Contribution-of-changing-nature-of-work.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Another major theme in the weekend conference is the role of new information systems technologies in business, government, and civil society. From an entrepreneurial viewpoint, clearly there is still much to be done in miniaturisation, automation, 3d printing, digitizing health care and many other ideas connected to the internet of things.<\/p>\n<p>One of the\u00a0key points was the link between the increasing power of\u00a0technology of all kinds and the far reaching consequences that this will have on jobs and even on the nature of work and human endeavour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Time Frame<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One thing that impressed me this weekend was that the particpant&#8217;s time frame went far beyond the planning horizon of most businesses and even their own\u00a0life spans.<\/p>\n<p>Lately it has become commonplace to think about business leaders as being very focused on the short term and not too interested in solving the world&#8217;s problems.\u00a0My experience from these people is that reality is completely different and that they have\u00a0a very keen interest to understand the world&#8217;s problems and find ways to help put forward solutions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The role of private enterprise<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another idea that came through very clearly was the role and responsibility of private enterprise to jump in and a general belief by the participants that government will not be able to do so.
