United States<\/a> in\u00a01919, Oliver Wendel Holmes, one of the U.S.&#8217;s greatest supreme court justices wrote that &#8220;The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic.&#8221;\u00a0While clearly a democracy needs to hear from all sorts of different viewpoints, <strong>Mr. Trump has, in my view, gone far over the line of decency<\/strong> and I question the wisdom of the Republican Party and even private companies such as <em>CNN<\/em> and the other networks for giving him\u00a0so much air time.<\/p>\n<p>By singling out group after group and lumping people of the same religion or ethnic group together with terrorists and drug cartels, he threatens to undermine the very social fabric that has made the United States what it is!<\/p>\n<p>In a live performance on <em>CNN<\/em> last Thursday night, <strong>Donald Trump pushed back against Pope Francis&#8217; condemnation of his plan to deport millions of Mexicans and build a wall along the border<\/strong>. He routinely bashes Muslims and Mexicans, and <strong>has now targeted\u00a0the spiritual leader of 1.2 billion people in the world and almost 70 million in the United States<\/strong> with his particular brand of sarcasm and ridicule.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/02\/79623.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2635\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2635\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/02\/79623-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"79623\" width=\"192\" height=\"269\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/02\/79623-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/02\/79623.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/wlc\/en\/article.php?ModuleId=10007391\">Martin Niem\u00f6ller<\/a>, a Protestant\u00a0cleric who lived in Nazi Germany, later <strong>wrote and spoke out about the responsibility of civil society to stand up for principle\u00a0against the forces of darkness, ignorance, and hate. He said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out\u2014<\/i><i style=\"line-height: 1.5\">Because I was not a Socialist.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out\u2014\u00a0<\/i><i>Because I was not a Trade Unionist.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out\u2014\u00a0<\/i><i>Because I was not a Jew.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Then they came for me\u2014and there was no one left to speak for me.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Strength from\u00a0diversity<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2634\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/02\/41BM9rsBBwL._UY250_.jpg\" alt=\"41BM9rsBBwL._UY250_\" width=\"133\" height=\"205\" \/>In one of her books, <em>Day of Empire<\/em>, Yale University&#8217;s Amy Shua makes the case that great countries have always been tolerant of diversity and brought people from all over the world to build their societies. I have written about the idea of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2015\/04\/27\/no-melting-pot-in-europe\/\">melting pot<\/a> in the U.S. in other posts and<strong> am deeply concerned that Mr. Trump&#8217;s rhetoric can damage the basic decency that most people in the U.S. share and put its greatest strength at risk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>A\u00a0nomination for Trump ?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The only good news coming out of the Republican South Carolina\u00a0primary which was held yesterday is that <strong>Trump&#8217;s support appears to peak out at just over\u00a030% and that is not enough for him to win the Republican nomination<\/strong>. As explained in another post, a few weeks ago, the current contests are held to select delegates to the conventions that the parties will have in the summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>One casualty\u00a0of the South Carolina primary is Jeb Bush<\/strong> who has officially &#8220;suspended&#8221; his campaign and <strong>the big question is if his supporters will shift to Marco Rubio<\/strong> who received\u00a022.5% of the vote against Trump&#8217;s 32.5%.
