{"id":2778,"date":"2016-04-18T08:30:05","date_gmt":"2016-04-18T07:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=2778"},"modified":"2016-05-16T10:29:27","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T09:29:27","slug":"iese-mba-students-and-geo-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2016\/04\/18\/iese-mba-students-and-geo-politics\/","title":{"rendered":"IESE MBA Students and Geo-politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second year of IESE&#8217;s full time <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mba.iese.edu\/\">MBA Program<\/a><\/strong> is winding done and the students will graduate next May 13th. <strong>Last week the students in my course on Strategy\u00a0and Geo-politics gave presentations on the projects they have been working<\/strong> on and I wanted to share them as they collectively underscore <strong>the connection between business strategy and the larger political and geo-political landscape in a given country<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2780\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2780\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres.png\" alt=\"imgres\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres.png 225w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><strong>Roshan and\u00a0Afghanistan<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One group looked at the connection between <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roshan.af\/Roshan\/Home.aspx\">Roshan<\/a>, a cell phone company connected to the Aga Khan Development Network\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.akdn.org\/\">AKDN<\/a>) and Afghanistan, where it is based. The company is <strong>a terrific example of the work of the AKDN which invests in some of the most difficult places in the world<\/strong> with the conviction that <strong>business can be a force for peace and prosperity<\/strong> and in this case, football.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ikea and India<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ikea has been sourcing production in India for <a href=\"http:\/\/ikea.in\/ikea-india.html\">28 years<\/a> and has been trying to begin retail operations there for some time. The interesting thing about the example is <strong>how Ikea&#8217;s positioning will likely be more up market in India and how it is difficult for them to find the kind of real estate that matches their business mode<\/strong>l in the country.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Unilever and Indonesia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unilever has been in Indonesia since 1933, commands a <strong>strong local market position<\/strong>, and to some degree has a \u00a0history bound up the colonial past of the Netherlands. You have to translate the web page but can find it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilever.co.id\/about\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gulf Link and Kuwait<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kgl.com\/\">KGL<\/a> is a Shia owned logistics company in Kuwait and the example highlights <strong>the difficulty in doing business in the modern middle east in light of the growing tensions<\/strong> between Iran and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2779\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2779\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2779\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel-300x169.jpeg\" alt=\"gumusut-kakap\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel-500x281.jpeg 500w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/gumusut-kakap-platform-with-accommodation-vessel.jpeg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2779\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">gumusut-kakap<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Shell and Malaysia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Shell first came to Malaysia in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shell.com.my\/aboutshell\/125-years-fuelling-malaysian-progress\/timeline.html\">1891<\/a> and has been leading the country&#8217;s energy industry until the establishment of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.petronas.com.my\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Petronas<\/a>, the national oil company in 1974 and still has an enormous influence in the country. It is currently developing offshore assets in the South China Sea which are clearly in a\u00a0territorial waters.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>KFC (Yum Brands) and Mongolia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Interestingly enough a team of Chinese students looked at KFC&#8217;s expansion into Mongolia. <strong>KFC is Chinese leading fast food franchise and the expansion into Mongolia highlights\u00a0both the competition\u00a0between China and Russia<\/strong> in the country as well as the difficulty of exporting certain food\u00a0concepts as Mongolians are not known for eating Chicken!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gazprom and Russia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The recent history of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gazprom.com\/\">Gazprom<\/a> is fascinating as <strong>it appears to closely track Russian foreign policy under President Vladimir Putin<\/strong>. The history of the different pipeline projects is\u00a0a fascinating story as pipelines take years to build and rely on geopolitical stability to operate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>KMW and Saudi Arabia<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>KMW is one of the largest manufacturers of battle tanks in the world and the students looked at the <strong>German companies issues in selling military hardware to Saudi Arabia<\/strong> which is building up its military capability given the war in Yeman, its support for the coalition against ISIS, and tensions with Iran.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2781\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2781\" style=\"width: 259px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2781\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2781\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/04\/imgres-1.jpg\" alt=\"Birnbaum with Palestinian Worker\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Birnbaum with Palestinian Worker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sodastream and Israel<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps the most moving example was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sodastream.com\/\">Sodastream<\/a> whose CEO, \u00a0Daniel Birnbaum, <strong>was obliged to close a factory in the Palestinian\u00a0Authority<\/strong> and eventual lay off Palestinian\u00a0workers as a result of international <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2015\/sep\/03\/sodastream-leaves-west-bank-as-ceo-says-boycott-antisemitic-and-pointless\">labelling requirements<\/a> for products made in the territories and constraints on cross border work permits imposed by the Israeli government. For Birnbaum, the idea of the factory was to create &#8220;an island of peace&#8221; and <strong>the story is a sad example of how politics and business can collide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The idea of the course, and to some degree, IESE Business School&#8217;s \u00a0full time MBA is <strong>to prepare young executives to play a role in the emerging global economy<\/strong>.
