Jo Cox<\/strong> on the streets of Birstall last Thursday, <strong>the real culprits are the politicians who have cast the referendum on Britain&#8217;s remaining or leaving the UK in apoplectic terms<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/06\/imgres-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2898\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/06\/imgres-2.jpg\" alt=\"imgres\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>The leaders of the two major political parties in the U.K., <strong>David Cameron<\/strong> and <strong>Jeremy Corbyn<\/strong>, made a special trip to the\u00a0village in Yorkshire, just south of Leeds, where she was killed. Missing from the scene were <strong>Nigel\u00a0Farage<\/strong> and <strong>Boris Johnson<\/strong> <strong>who have painted next Thursday&#8217;s referendum in the starkest terms and blamed immigrants\u00a0<strong>f<\/strong>or all of England&#8217;s problems<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Just a slugfest<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>There are a number of <strong>rational arguments for both<\/strong> the <strong>Remain<\/strong> and <strong>Leave<\/strong> campaigns but, as pointed out by Brian Leggett in a prescient <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/leggett\/2016\/06\/15\/political-debate-how-can-we-avoid-the-usual-slugfest\/\">post<\/a> last week, <strong>the country&#8217;s politicians have allowed the discussion to degenerate into a slugfest<\/strong>. \u00a0To be fair, both Farage and Johnson immediately condemned Mrs. Cox&#8217;s murder but <strong>there is a straight line between their rhetoric and the crazy act<\/strong> of one of their supporters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2899\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2899\" style=\"width: 299px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/06\/imgres-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2899\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/06\/imgres-1-1.jpg\" alt=\" ft.com\" width=\"299\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ft.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>It seems that Mair killed Cox because of her outspoken support\u00a0for immigration <\/strong>and conviction that Britain&#8217;s <strong>multicultural reality is a strength<\/strong> rather than a weakness and a problem. When brought to court yesterday, Mr. Mair said his name was &#8220;Death to traitors, freedom for Britain&#8221;. Although it has not been substantiated, some witnesses said they heard Mr. Mair shout &#8220;Britain first!&#8221; as he murdered\u00a0Mrs. Cox and whatever he said, <strong>it appears that this heinous crime is clearly\u00a0the result of a\u00a0twisted interpretation of the Brexit campaign<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks in Birstall, <strong>David Cameron urged his countrymen to &#8220;stand back and think about some of the things that are so important in our country&#8221;<\/strong>. Trump said Mr. Mateen was &#8220;born an Afghan&#8221; when in fact the man was born in New York to Afghan immigrants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The world in 2016 is a complex place<\/strong> and there are <strong>many people who have trouble adapting to this complexity<\/strong>. In this group there are also people whose\u00a0lives are not what they had hoped for or one reason or other and are deeply unhappy, fearful, or just plain angry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By offering ridiculously simple explanations\u00a0for the complexity<\/strong> we\u00a0face and <strong>blaming a specific ethnic<\/strong> group or political situation for all of our problems, <strong>these reckless politicians encourage acts of violence<\/strong> such as that killed Mrs. Cox.<\/p>\n<p>They should be deeply ashamed of themselves and re-think their approach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although Tomas Mair, a clearly disturbed member of a far right organization in the U.K. is the person who brutally murdered Labor M.O.
