{"id":3212,"date":"2016-11-14T08:30:06","date_gmt":"2016-11-14T07:30:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=3212"},"modified":"2016-12-18T17:56:11","modified_gmt":"2016-12-18T16:56:11","slug":"trumps-win-seen-from-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2016\/11\/14\/trumps-win-seen-from-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s Win Seen From China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The day after <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s upset win last Tuesday, I found myself flying from New York to Shanghai to teach on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/global-executive-mba\/\">IESE&#8217;s Global Executive MBA.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Reading the paper here this morning, it appears that the <strong>Chinese leadership is delighted with the news from\u00a0the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The End of theTrans Pacific Partnership (TTP) ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/detail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3218\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/detail-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"detail\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/detail-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/detail.jpg 391w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The first thing that seems to gladden the Chinese is Trump&#8217;s staunch opposition to the TTP. The issue which seems to have gotten lost in the U.S. campaign is that the TTP was crafted in order to limit Chinese economic expansion across the Pacific Rim and to make it clear to the countries in the region that they are better off looking toward Washington than Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>China fully intends to extend its influence across the region through the financing and construction by Chinese firms of needed infrastructure improvements. The price of China&#8217;s largess will be support for its expansion the East and South China Sea and perhaps the closure of American Naval Bases.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The End of the Pivot to Asia ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3217\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3217\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/u15780387851927555493fm21gp0.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3217\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/u15780387851927555493fm21gp0-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"USS Ronald Reagan\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/u15780387851927555493fm21gp0-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2016\/11\/u15780387851927555493fm21gp0.jpg 331w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3217\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">USS Ronald Reagan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The other expected outcome of the upcoming Trump administration is the end of the United States&#8217; pivot to Asia which involved not only the trade deal but also a redeployment of the American Navy.<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese understand that Trump will focus attention on domestic issues and perhaps reduce military spending. As a candidate, Trump charged American allies with having a free ride\u00a0and said that unilaterally keeping the sea lanes open was a bad deal for the American taxpayer. Besides declaring open season on drug dealers and their customers causing the killings of thousands of \u00a0people by the police and extrajudicial hit squads as well as the arrest of tens of thousands.<\/p>\n<p>In China a few weeks ago, Duterte\u00a0announced his country&#8217;s &#8220;separation&#8221; from Washington publicly insulting Americans and embracing the Chinese as fellow Asians. \u00a0After the election, Duterte \u00a0said he was hopeful about working with Donald Trump since\u00a0they &#8220;both like to swear&#8221;. In contrast, Duterte bridled against Barak Obama&#8217;s criticism of\u00a0his &#8220;shoot to kill&#8221; policy with respect to drug dealers and insulted his mother.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Chinese Century ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The issue is not about China&#8217;s rise any longer but about China&#8217;s expansion to become a world power. China has invested heavily in Latin America and Africa and is developing an alternative to the World Bank. Chinese\u00a0companies such as Huawei have expanded all over the world largely assisted by government owned financial institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Most economists maintain that this century will be all about Asia. If Washington is not attentive, China will establish itself as the economic and military leader of that century.
