{"id":693,"date":"2013-11-18T09:00:52","date_gmt":"2013-11-18T08:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/?p=693"},"modified":"2018-01-20T19:02:59","modified_gmt":"2018-01-20T18:02:59","slug":"chinas-environment-collapse-or-catalyst","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/2013\/11\/18\/chinas-environment-collapse-or-catalyst\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s Environment: Collapse or Catalyst?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I had the privilege teaching on IESE&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/global-executive-mba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Executive MBA Program<\/a> in <strong>Shanghai<\/strong> and on this trip the country&#8217;s environmental challenges struck me first hand.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Food, Air &amp; Water Quality<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/imgres-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-690 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/imgres-3.jpg\" alt=\"imgres-3\" width=\"76\" height=\"96\" \/><\/a><\/b>Our students had visited a number of Chinese families under the supervision of my colleague, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/lee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yih Teen Lee<\/a>, an expert on cross cultural understanding, and these people spoke about their concerns about the <strong>safety of food they eat<\/strong>. Friends who have recently moved to China and long term expatriates confessed to me their concern about the water they were drinking and even potential contamination of the soil in which crops were raised. What brought the point home was <strong>the way people talk about polution. &#8220;How is the air today?&#8221; is as common as asking<\/strong> if its going to rain in Barcelona. There is even an app for it!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/air.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-691\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/air.jpeg\" alt=\"air\" width=\"103\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last Friday, the PMI index, a commonly used air pollution indicator, reached 260 in Shanghai, which is considered &#8220;Very Unhealthy&#8221;, we were told to take a taxi to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ceibs.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CEIBS<\/a> and not walk the half a mile as it would be hazardous to our health!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">A friend who lives in Beijing told me that his children&#8217;s international school is putting up a dome over the sports field in order to keep up with another private school in the city which already has two. At issue is the ability of kids to go outside and play and most expats appear to have filtered air their schools, homes, cars, and offices.<\/span><\/p>\n<iframe class='xavier' width='100%' height='400' frameborder='0' allow='fullscreen' allowfullscreen src='https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HHQ10AH5na0'><\/iframe>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fdoing-business%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F693%2F&text=China+appears+to+be+at+the+start+of+an+unprecedented+environmental+crisis%21+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">China appears to be at the start of an unprecedented environmental crisis! <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Electric Dreams and Opportunity<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the Chinese Central Committee met for its third plenary session, a major policy review and publicly pledged to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.xinhuanet.com\/english\/video\/2013-11\/15\/c_132891311.htm\">draw a red line on environmental protection<\/a>. As part of its policy, <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fdoing-business%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F693%2F&text=China+is+encouraging+foreign+clean+tech+companies+to+come+to+China+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">China is encouraging foreign clean tech companies to come to China <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>\u00a0and be part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714;font-size: 1rem\">Meanwhile , on the streets of Shanghai, the ubiquitous motor scooters are increasingly electric, with low slung batteries chained to the bottom of the scooter. On the sidewalk, you must take care not to trip over the extension cords which run out the front doors of shops to plug in the bikes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/200ed-grumbine.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-698\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/doing-business\/files\/2013\/11\/200ed-grumbine-150x133.jpg\" alt=\"200ed-grumbine\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/feature\/china_at_crossroads_balancing_the_economy_and_environment\/2710\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> for Yale&#8217;s Environmental report,\u00a0Edward Grumbine, an American author and environmental researcher living in China, sees the country at a crossroads where <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fdoing-business%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F693%2F&text=China+may+have+to+choose+between+economic+growth+and+the+environment+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">China may have to choose between economic growth and the environment <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>. While clearly the Chinese people are increasingly demanding environmental action, I&#8217;m not sure they will be willing to trade it for prosperity. Will China accept slowing its economy down by a couple of percentage points to become cleaner? Will that be enough?<\/p>\n<p>Walking back from class despite the smog (the PMI had dropped to 160), one of my students expressed his view that China will jump into the forefront of environmental friendly technologies, clean up its cities, and show and demonstrate a new model for clean, sustainable prosperity.
