This amount exceeds 300 percent of the GDP for most of the European economies while<strong> Japan and the UK have surpassed the 500 percent level<\/strong> (IMF, McKinsey Global Institute).<\/p>\n<p>If we focus on the <strong>public debt<\/strong> only, the picture is equally worrisome, with countries like the <strong>UK, France or Spain having already topped the 90 percent threshold level<\/strong>. However, <strong>this government debt is tiny<\/strong> <strong>compared<\/strong> to the amount represented by <i>Unfunded Liabilities<\/i>, <strong>the promises of pensions and health care made for future generations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2013\/11\/Rethinking-healthcare-system.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1044 alignleft\" alt=\"Rethinking healthcare system\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2013\/11\/Rethinking-healthcare-system.jpg\" width=\"602\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2013\/11\/Rethinking-healthcare-system.jpg 602w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2013\/11\/Rethinking-healthcare-system-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Feconomics%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F1042%2F&text=Our+healthcare+systems+are+obsolete+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Our healthcare systems are obsolete <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>. They were designed when a large proportion of health concerns and expenditure was devoted to acute conditions. Today the problem is different. The changing demographic context is <b>shifting the burden of disease from acute to chronic conditions<\/b>. <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Feconomics%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F1042%2F&text=Patients+with+at+least+one+chronic+condition+represent+85+percent+of+healthcare+utilization+in+the+US+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Patients with at least one chronic condition represent 85 percent of healthcare utilization in the US <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rwjf.org\/content\/dam\/farm\/reports\/reports\/2010\/rwjf54583\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.natpact.info\/uploads\/Chronic%20Care%20Compendium.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">in the UK<\/a> they imply 80 percent of primary care consultations and 66 percent of emergency hospital admissions.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/nmh\/publications\/ncd_profiles_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0(WHO), most of the illnesses and death related to\u00a0<strong>chronic diseases are closely linked to four risky\u00a0<\/strong><b>behaviours<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lack of physical activity<\/li>\n<li>Poor nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Tobacco use<\/li>\n<li>Excessive alcohol consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><\/strong>The <strong>good news<\/strong> as that recent evidence shows that there is scope to improve: a recent report from the <strong>Institute of Medicine <\/strong>(an independent, not-for profit organization that is part of the National Academy of Sciences)\u00a0on the state of the US healthcare sector <strong>found that about <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Feconomics%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F1042%2F&text=Thirty+percent+of+the+money+committed+to+healthcare+was+not+used+in+the+best+possible+way+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">thirty percent of the money committed to healthcare was not used in the best possible way <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a><\/strong>.
