{"id":1243,"date":"2014-04-23T12:56:32","date_gmt":"2014-04-23T11:56:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/?p=1243"},"modified":"2015-03-17T11:54:33","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T10:54:33","slug":"the-fight-against-creative-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/2014\/04\/23\/the-fight-against-creative-destruction\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fight Against Creative Destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"Uber\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Uber<\/strong><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uber.com\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1245\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2014\/04\/Uber-appstore.jpg\" alt=\"Capture of the Uber app in the Apple Store\" width=\"140\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2014\/04\/Uber-appstore.jpg 267w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2014\/04\/Uber-appstore-171x300.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 140px) 100vw, 140px\" \/><\/a> \u2013 an app that links private taxi drivers with customers \u2013 <strong>has encountered several roadblocks around the world<\/strong>: a <strong>Brussels<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/b23e9ee4-c4b9-11e3-9aeb-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2zV5VZwrD\" target=\"_blank\">court<\/a> banned it, a <strong>Berlin<\/strong> court ruled that the taxis are rental cars and must therefore return to their place of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/1591faf2-c638-11e3-ba0e-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2zV5VZwrD\" target=\"_blank\">business between each fair,<\/a> <strong>Paris<\/strong> briefly instituted a rule that an Uber cab had to wait for 15 minutes before picking up a passenger regardless of how far apart the two initially were, and the company has run into similar bumps in the road in several <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xconomy.com\/boston\/2013\/03\/12\/uber-sued-in-boston-case-could-wind-up-in-federal-court\/\" target=\"_blank\">American cities<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ft.com\/intl\/cms\/s\/0\/69dbba8e-6716-11e3-a5f9-00144feabdc0.html#axzz2zV5VZwrD\" target=\"_blank\">New York City, Paris and Berlin<\/a>, are all restricting the use of <strong><a title=\"Airbnb\" href=\"https:\/\/www.airbnb.com\/mobile\" target=\"_blank\">Airbnb<\/a><\/strong>, an app analogous to Uber, but for short-term <strong>rental of private apartments<\/strong>. In New Jersey the sale of <strong><a title=\"Tesla electric cars\" href=\"http:\/\/www.teslamotors.com\" target=\"_blank\">Tesla<\/a><\/strong> electric cars <a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2014\/03\/28\/news\/companies\/tesla-new-jersey-sales\/\">might soon come to a halt<\/a> because of<strong> an obscure ruling mandating that cars should be sold through independent car dealers and not directly from producer to consumer<\/strong> as Teslas are.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1248\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1248\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2014\/04\/airbnb-homepage.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1248\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/economics\/files\/2014\/04\/airbnb-homepage.jpg\" alt=\"Detail of Airbnb homepage\" width=\"800\" height=\"524\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1248\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Detail of Airbnb homepage<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Feconomics%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F1243%2F&text=Why+such+zeal+from+local+city+halls+and+court+rooms+in+regulating+the+conduct+of+business%3F+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Why such zeal from local city halls and court rooms in regulating the conduct of business? <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>\u00a0<strong>It seems that this is just the latest installment of the age-old wheel of \u201ccreative destruction\u201d<\/strong>: <strong>whenever a new product or service is invented<\/strong> &#8211; whatever may be its benefits &#8211; <strong>there will be both winners and losers<\/strong>. One could argue that it is the job of politicians everywhere to balance the costs and benefits of new innovations and block those that do not benefit society as a whole. And that the consequences for those who have long been employed as taxi drivers, in the case of Uber, should be given extra weight.<\/p>\n<p>It seems that in practice, however, <strong>the interests of the incumbent taxi companies, hotel owners and car dealerships have much greater weight than the potential gain to local consumers and new companies<\/strong>. As Mr. Leipold, the chairman of Berlin\u2019s taxi association, put it, \u201cThis isn\u2019t a student start-up against a big taxi cartel. Uber is backed by <a href=\"http:\/\/markets.ft.com\/tearsheets\/performance.asp?s=us:GOOG\" target=\"_blank\">Google<\/a>.
