They are professional investors, and they act accordingly. <strong>Their role is to <\/strong><\/span><strong>evaluate investment opportunities<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><strong>; they do not evaluate business ideas or projects<\/strong>. What they want to know at the end of the day is whether the business proposal they are about to assess is capable of generating a determined return on their investment, and also, what role is expected for both the money required, and of themselves!\u00a0 In short, <strong>they want to know <\/strong><\/span><strong><i style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">why<\/i><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> and <\/span><i style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">for what<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"><strong> the money is raised<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Five Questions\u00a0that Everybody Consider&#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Let\u2019s first review the <strong>five basic \u201cordinary\u201d issues that everybody, including investors, takes into consideration<\/strong> (or should take into consideration), when evaluating a business opportunity\u2019s potential:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>MARKET<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Is there a market that can be identified that has an appealing growth potential? <\/i><\/strong>(<strong>Does it exist or it should be created?<\/strong> What is the feasibility of entry and to what extent?)<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #993300;\">OPPORTUNITY WINDOW<br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><i><strong>Is this the right time? <\/strong><\/i>(Why today? Why not yesterday? Too early? Too late? How long will the window remain open?)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>COMPETITION<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>What is the existing and likely competition?<\/i><\/strong> (And to what extent has the sector in which the venture attempts to operate been adequately evaluated, i.e., entry barriers, new entrants, substitutes, customers, suppliers, etc.? What is the profit potential in the this sector?)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>BUSINESS MODEL<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Does it have an economically, and conceptually viable, business model?<\/i> <\/strong>(Margins, profits, breakeven, etc.\u00a0 <strong>What is the required know-how?<\/strong> To what extent can it be protected?)<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>STRATEGY<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Does it have a focused and differentiated strategy?<\/i><\/strong> (Who are the customers? How are they acquired and retained?\u00a0 What is the value proposition to the customer? How sustainable is the competitive advantage? However, for investors an \u201cattractive\u201d and \u201cviable\u201d opportunity is a necessary condition but not sufficient to finally support a decision; <strong>the opportunity must also be deemed \u201cinvestable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>The Other Five Questions that Investors Make (and Entrepreneurs Should Make)<\/h3>\n<p>Here we have <strong>five additional and specific questions that investors always make<\/strong> (and everybody should make) when conducting a comprehensive assessment of the<strong> <i>investability potential<\/i> of a business opportunity<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #993300;\">SCALABILITY<\/span><br \/>\n<i>Is the concept scalable?<\/i><\/b> (Or similarly, how big could it become, and as it gets bigger and bigger, how much more profitable will it be and to what extent could the concept be easily replicated?)<\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #993300;\">EXIT<\/span><br \/>\n<i>Is there a possible exit for the investor to recover his\/her investment with the expected return?<\/i> <\/b>(What are the likely options to exit? Can tag or drag along rights be considered?)<\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #993300;\">CO-INVESTMENT<\/span><br \/>\n<i>Can the project attract other co-investors to come on board?<\/i> <\/b>(If so, to what extent are they likeminded partners to co-invest with? To what extent can other potential co-investors be spotted within the investor\u2019s own network?)<\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #993300;\">RETURN<\/span><br \/>\n<i>Does the deal provide an adequate return consistent with level of risk implied?<\/i> <\/b>(At what stage of development is the project (technology\/product, financial metrics\/revenue)? \u00a0What is the probability of getting an IRR of -100%, 0%, 10%, 20%, 50% or 100%?<\/li>\n<li><b><span style=\"color: #993300;\">TEAM<\/span><br \/>\n<i>Does it have a complete, committed, compatible and complementary management team (4 C\u2019s)?<\/i> <\/b>(Have they work together before? To what extent are their skills complementary? What are the personal objectives\/vision of the team\u2019s key members? Are they the kind of people with whom one is able to get on well, and develop a good relationship?)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"left\">I<strong>nvestors are always trying to identify attractive business opportunities from good business ideas.\u00a0 However, they particularly need to be very disciplined about selecting \u201cinvestable\u201d opportunities<\/strong> out of the many business opportunities that they come across. Making an investment decision is a complex process.\u00a0 Knowing what questions to ask can help investors find the right answers to effectively support their decision.<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><strong>The challenge for entrepreneurs is then to incorporate these questions into their own opportunity self-assessment process<\/strong>. Doing so will improve the quality of the entrepreneurial process greatly for all parties involved.
