It turns out that this is far from reality. Increasingly, executives from major <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fentrepreneurship%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F83%2F&text=European+corporations+are+traveling+the+world+in+search+of+new+business+opportunities+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">European corporations are traveling the world in search of new business opportunities <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>. In their search for growth, many end up spending time in <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">Silicon Valley<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\"> to learn more about <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">innovation and entrepreneurship<\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.714285714; font-size: 1rem;\">, and some stay there for years. But what exactly are they doing there?<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_90\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-90\" style=\"width: 819px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/entrepreneurship\/files\/2014\/01\/6287981514_27c184e344_b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-90 \" alt=\"Zeppelin trip over Silicon Valley with geeks by Airship Ventures, by Ross Mayfield\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/entrepreneurship\/files\/2014\/01\/6287981514_27c184e344_b.jpg\" width=\"819\" height=\"612\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-90\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zeppelin trip over Silicon Valley with geeks by Airship Ventures, by Ross Mayfield<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Take the example of <strong>Siemens<\/strong>, the giant engineering company headquartered in Germany.\u00a0<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fentrepreneurship%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F83%2F&text=Siemens+has+been+present+in+Silicon+Valley+for+about+15+years+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Siemens has been present in Silicon Valley for about 15 years <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>\u00a0through its Siemens Venture Capital business unit.\u00a0 The unit identifies early stage innovative companies that have the potential to impact Siemens\u2019 core business and invests in their equity. \u00a0In these 15 years, <strong>they have invested in about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/financial-organization\/siemens-venture-capital\" target=\"_blank\">150 ventures<\/a><\/strong> (many based in Silicon Valley, but not all)<strong>, and contributed to the capital of about 40 venture capital funds<\/strong>. Through these activities Siemens closely tracks <strong>relevant innovations<\/strong> and, in some cases, competes with other corporate venture capital programs to establish a privileged relationship with cutting-edge startups. An interesting variation of this model is the one that <strong>Alstom<\/strong>, <strong>Schneider Electric<\/strong> and <strong>Solvay<\/strong> have developed when <strong>they joined forces to pool their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aster.com\/index.php?id=5\" target=\"_blank\">corporate venture capital activities<\/a> under one roof and made investments in Silicon Valley<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_92\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-92\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jurvetson\/5499949739\/in\/faves-30998987@N03\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-92  \" title=\"Google driverless car operating on a testing path, by Steve Jurvetson\" alt=\"Google driverless car operating on a testing path, by Steve Jurvetson\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/entrepreneurship\/files\/2014\/01\/google-car.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/entrepreneurship\/files\/2014\/01\/google-car.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/entrepreneurship\/files\/2014\/01\/google-car-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-92\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google driverless car operating on a testing path, by Steve Jurvetson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other European companies have taken a very different approach in Silicon Valley. For example, automotive companies such as <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/nissannews.com\/en-US\/nissan\/usa\/releases\/renault-nissan-alliance-opens-bigger-silicon-valley-research-center-to-enhance-advanced-research-and-development\" target=\"_blank\">Renault-Nissan<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vwerl.com\/our-work\" target=\"_blank\">Volkswagen<\/a><\/strong> have set up advanced <strong>research centers to carry out R&amp;D there<\/strong>, both in-house and in collaboration with Silicon Valley firms and research institutes. After Silicon Valley powerhouses such as Google invested in developing futuristic concepts such as autonomous driving (cars that \u201cdrive themselves\u201d), <a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fentrepreneurship%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F83%2F&text=European+automotive+companies+have+sent+their+own+engineers+to+Silicon+Valley+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">European automotive companies have sent their own engineers to Silicon Valley <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>\u00a0to not only learn about these new developments, but also <strong>to shape them by initiating their own research programs that make funding available to their local R&amp;D partners<\/strong>.
