{"id":643,"date":"2015-07-09T08:36:58","date_gmt":"2015-07-09T07:36:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/ethics\/?p=643"},"modified":"2015-07-09T08:37:21","modified_gmt":"2015-07-09T07:37:21","slug":"why-is-it-hard-to-be-ethical-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/ethics\/2015\/07\/09\/why-is-it-hard-to-be-ethical-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Why is it hard to be ethical in business?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>No one ever said leading was easy, much less leading with ethics.<\/strong> But the latter is very important. <strong>It is the difference between a good executive<\/strong>, in the full sense of the expression, and one who only knows how to achieve <strong>technical perfection<\/strong>, and how to do things right, but does not know how to <strong>do what needs to be done in each case, with long-term vision and a sense of responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Being ethical in business is difficult, given the nature of the tasks involved with leading<\/strong> an organization:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>The decisions are complex; there is no time for reflection, vital information is missing, etc. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The competition is intense, sometimes brutal. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>We are enslaved by results: You are what you achieve, and there are perverse incentives,<\/strong> which lead people to do things that should not be done because people get paid to do things they should not be doing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is an abundance of inertia<\/strong>, i.e., &#8220;that&#8217;s how it&#8217;s always been done.&#8221; It is <strong>the success trap<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There are mistakes, inevitably, and the human tendency to deny them or cover them up,<\/strong> which makes change very difficult.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moral sensitivity is reduced. <\/strong><strong>Ethical problems are not apparent<\/strong>, as they are often masked under technical considerations, which are the dominant force.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is a lot of cognitive dissonance<\/strong>: resistance to accepting evidence contrary to what we think.<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is the tendency to rationalize the behavior<\/strong>: What is immoral is presented as something acceptable, as a normal practice, &#8220;everyone does it&#8221;\u2026<\/li>\n<li><strong>There is also a prevalence of bureaucratic culture<\/strong>: \u201cThis is how things are done here,&#8221; &#8220;Follow our lead or you&#8217;re out of here,\u201d etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ethics is not considered a part of the company\u2019s decision making<\/strong>. Decisions are made by <strong>experts<\/strong>, who only consider their limited field, and overlook the implications of their decisions on others: a salesperson decides what needs to be done to make sales, regardless of whether this affects manufacturing, harms the environment or creates comparative injustices for other departments. In other words, <strong>a partial, limited approach is an invitation to not act ethically<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Individualism predominates in business<\/strong> as well: everyone has their own agenda, especially at the executive level. <strong>Values are a private matter. The idea of what is ethical bothers me, because it doesn&#8217;t allow me to do things my way<\/strong>. The company ends up being <strong>an amoral subject<\/strong>: ethics should not come into play here; at most, as an adornment, but that&#8217;s it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>The way ethics manifests itself in the company doesn&#8217;t make it easy to do the right thing either<\/strong>. We demand <strong>that ethics be profitable<\/strong>&#8230; because if not, the governing body would not accept it. <strong>We reduce ethics to a set of external constraints that are imposed by society<\/strong> or the media. This reduces ethics to a code of conduct, which must be met even if it is not profitable\u2014so we might as well not pay much attention to it.<\/p>\n<p>Or ethics could mean <strong>doing something extra<\/strong>: a spa for employees, inviting them to volunteer on weekends, or doing philanthropic work with the profits.<\/p>\n<a class=\"inline-twitter-link inline-tweet-click\" href=\"#\" onclick=\"inline_tweet_sharer_open_win('https:\\\/\\\/twitter.com\\\/intent\\\/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.iese.edu%2Fethics%2Fwp-json%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fposts%2F643%2F&text=Yes%2C+it+is+hard+to+be+ethical+in+business.+But+it+is+necessary+');\" title=\"Tweet This!\">Yes, it is hard to be ethical in business. But it is necessary <span class=\"non-dashicons\"> <\/span><\/a>.
