In 2019, the company revitalized its business model with a more brand-centric and innovation-driven approach.<\/em><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p>I got my official start in the family business as an intern in the early 1990s, and held various roles in sales, logistics, finance, marketing, purchasing and management over the following 10 years. In 2003, I was named <strong>Cottet\u2019s general manager<\/strong> and <strong>president in 2018<\/strong> after my father passed away.<\/p>\n<p>Cottet\u00a0has\u00a0retail establishments in Spain and Andorra. We have <strong>240 employees, 37 branded stores and three franchises<\/strong>, <strong>with plans for further expansion<\/strong>. In 2023, we started our <strong>wholesale business<\/strong> after attending the SILMO optical fair in France. This offers another interesting channel for growth.<\/p>\n<p>In its fourth generation, Cottet is owned by the <strong>four members of my family branch<\/strong>. My youngest brother \u00c1lex serves as the vice-president, while my sister Marta and brother Sergio are in the family council.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>1902, the year it all began<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Cottet \u00d3ptica was <strong>founded 121 years ago <\/strong>by my great-grandfather, Constantino Cottet, born in 1865 in Morez, France, near the Swiss border. He started out working at his family firm, Fr\u00e8res Cottet, a manufacturer of eyeglass frames.<\/p>\n<p>In 1888 at age 23, he was sent to the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona to promote the company and open new markets. He fell in love with the city, eventually deciding to <strong>put down roots and establish his own company<\/strong> there in the early 1900s.<\/p>\n<p>Barcelona\u2019s emblematic Portal de l\u2019\u00c0ngel boulevard was the site chosen for <strong>Cottet\u2019s first store, which opened its doors in 1902<\/strong>. Located in a vibrant shopping district, the 2,000-square-meter store was the <strong>largest optical store<\/strong> in Europe for years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1115\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-300x206.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-300x206.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-1024x704.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-768x528.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-1536x1057.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-2048x1409.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/1925-optical-cottet-bn-500x344.jpeg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">From Barcelona to Sevilla<\/span> <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Following my great-grandfather\u2019s death in 1915, his three sons took over the business: <strong>my grandfather, Rolando, and two great-uncles, Fernando and Renato<\/strong>, who left the family fold in 1930 to establish his own store in Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Constantino\u2019s sons built successful businesses over the next two decades until <strong>1936, when civil war broke out in Spain<\/strong>. They closed their wholesale and retail operations in Barcelona and Madrid, and relocated to Sevilla.<\/p>\n<p>There, they set up a small lens-manufacturing factory called <strong>Industria Nacional de \u00d3ptica<\/strong> with the support of the Rodenstock family in Germany. This company grew into <strong>Indo \u00d3ptica, also known as INDO<\/strong>, for years an industry leader in Spain and my father\u2019s and grandfather\u2019s future place of employment.<\/p>\n<p>When the war ended, the brothers resumed their operations in Barcelona and Madrid, where they ran prosperous operations for decades to come. The 1<strong>950s and 1960s were especially prosperous,<\/strong> coinciding with the burgeoning optical industry, the rising quality of life in Spain, and the emerging trend of eyewear as a fashion statement.<\/p>\n<p>During this time, the brothers <strong>decided to divide the business into three branches<\/strong>: Fernando would oversee the Barcelona store; Rolando, Indo \u00d3ptica; and Renato, the Cottet store in Madrid.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Growing up around the family firm<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I grew up hearing about the family business and visiting <strong>Cottet stores and the INDO factory<\/strong>. As a high school and college student, my summers were spent attending Cottet customers alongside my siblings and cousins.<\/p>\n<p>Despite our close connection with the family business, <strong>we never assumed we would work there.<\/strong> My father worked in INDO, which was an extremely specialized, industrial setting.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Barcelona store was the domain of my uncle Fernando, who was a clergy member. As his interests lay elsewhere, he entrusted the firm\u2019s management and oversight to a non-family member, while also creating the <strong>non-profit Cottet-Mor Foundation<\/strong> to help the economically disadvantaged.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Ownership and the family protocol<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to <strong>distinguish between ownership and leadership<\/strong> since it\u2019s one thing to inherit shares and another to work as an employee in the company\u2019s day-to-day.<\/p>\n<p>This delineation goes back to my grandfather\u2019s days at INDO, when one of his partners approached him one day, asking him to \u201cfind a job\u201d for his son. He refused, <strong>defining a policy with the other shareholders<\/strong> that prevented relatives of INDO board members from joining the firm \u2013 Cottet family members included.<\/p>\n<p>We defined a slightly different family protocol at Cottet in 1998 regarding family members working in the firm. <strong>Our first rule: we will never tailor-make a position for anyone<\/strong>, so the vacancy must already exist.<\/p>\n<p>Other stipulations include having a relevant university degree, competitive profile and experience outside the family firm. In 2014, the family faced a <strong>difficult crossroads when INDO entered bankruptcy proceedings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While painful, the experience offered <strong>vital lessons for the future<\/strong> on the importance of effectively planning <strong>generational handovers<\/strong> and establishing <strong>clear lines of communication<\/strong> across the family and firm.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Competitive landscape<\/span> <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nearly 80% of eyeglass frames are produced in China, and <strong>five major manufacturers control 80% of the global eyewear industry<\/strong>. These companies vertically integrated in the early 2000s, and are now leaders in both manufacturing and distribution.<\/p>\n<p>Against this competitive backdrop, my siblings and I decided to i<strong>nnovate Cottet\u2019s business model in 2019,<\/strong> moving from the sale of third-party eyewear and hearing aids to dedicating at least half of our efforts to the design, manufacturing and marketing of Cottet-branded eyewear.<\/p>\n<p>We also <strong>renovated Cottet\u2019s board of directors and top leadership<\/strong> under the guidance of external advisors, and appointed a non-family general manager.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Putting our customers first<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We aspire to develop long-term relationships with customers by offering high-quality products at optimal price points in <strong>beautiful and modern light-filled stores<\/strong>. These efforts were recognized in May 2022, when we were honored with a prestigious <strong>MIDO BeStore award<\/strong> for our store design and innovation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1117\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089-500x334.jpg 500w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/files\/2023\/11\/RAMBLA-FS_Cottet-190912-089.jpg 1181w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In terms of our brand portfolio, <strong>we offer three collections of eyewear frames<\/strong> \u2013 Cottet Barcelona, Urban and Lunnetier1840 \u2013 that account for approximately 50% of our sales. Our stores also carry <strong>innovative third-party eyewear and hearing aids<\/strong>, which we began selling back in the 1970s. This specialization represents around 25% of our sales revenues and sets Cottet apart from the competition.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Future horizons<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"www.cottet.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cottet<\/a> aspires to build further momentum by opening <strong>more branded stores in Spain,<\/strong> where we still have room to grow, and <strong>expanding into other markets like Portugal,<\/strong> as we did in Andorra. We also have <strong>wholesale agreements<\/strong> with multi-brand distributors in France, Greece and the Czech Republic, which is another avenue we are exploring.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Working in a family-owned business has many positives, including the possibility of <strong>forging long-term relationships with suppliers, employees and other key stakeholders<\/strong>, and looking beyond the bottom line and short-term objectives.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, it comes with <strong>distinct obligations and responsibilities,<\/strong> many of which are learned through the \u201cschool of hard knocks.\u201d While there are plenty of master\u2019s degrees in management, I have yet to encounter a <strong>\u201cMaster\u2019s in Ownership.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Life is getting more complicated by the day, which is why b<strong>usiness leaders should never lose sight of what\u2019s most important \u2013 their customers<\/strong> \u2013 even more than shareholders.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, Cottet will continue to place a laser-focus on our clients to ensure a stellar customer experience, which, in my view, is the <strong>key to a company\u2019s long-term sustainability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Javier Cottet is the president of Cottet \u00d3ptica, a family-owned Spanish firm that traces its roots to the late 1800s in industrial France.
