Ideally, these are <strong>founded on professional criteria<\/strong> and <strong>approved<\/strong> by both predecessors and successors.<\/p>\n<p>The lack thereof is an <strong>all too frequent mistake<\/strong> and the most <strong>common source of conflict<\/strong> in family-owned firms.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Movie: YES. Ongoing series: NO<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A generational handover should be <strong>framed as a movie, with a clear beginning and an end<\/strong>, as opposed to a neverending series that drags on season after season.<\/p>\n<p>While both follow the same plot line, the latter often sets off a perfect storm,<strong> jeopardizing the continuity of the business<\/strong>, stability of the family unit and happiness of its members.<\/p>\n<p>The key is to make an excellent movie with a <strong>solid start <\/strong>and a<strong> happy ending<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Script<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As Alfred Hitchcock observed, <strong>\u201cTo make a great film you need three things\u2013the script, the script and the script.\u201d<\/strong> Extrapolated to the realm of family business, this means a family protocol with clear rules outlining the succession process.<\/p>\n<p>The script must put<strong> people in the spotlight<\/strong> and consider everyone\u2019s concrete circumstances and concerns in the succession process since the will of the people will determine its success.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><strong>Cast of characters<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We need the <strong>best actors and need them to stick to the script<\/strong>. Generational handovers in family businesses have four main actors: the predecessors, the successors, the company and the family.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; The predecessors:<\/strong> The first step is to reflect on their leadership archetype: are they <strong>monarchs, generals, emperors or ambassadors?<\/strong> Armed with this knowledge, we can develop the best approach to pave the terrain and assist them in handing over the helm. Identifying and deliberating their \u201cnon-negotiables\u201d will be key.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; The successors<\/strong>: Rational and non-emotional criteria should be the basis when choosing a successor. Respect their <strong>personal ambitions<\/strong> rather than forcing them into taking the helm. As in relay races, motivate them to tug the baton to let the predecessor know he or she can let go, that they\u2019ve started the race and are ready for action.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; The company<\/strong>: Prepare the company by <strong>clearly delineating company functions<\/strong> and decision-making responsibilities among ownership, governance and management. Decision-making systems should evolve from an individual model to a shared one.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&gt; The family<\/strong>: As explored in a <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/family-business\/2023\/7-ideas-to-avoid-tensions-in-the-family-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous article<\/a>, <strong>family councils are the cornerstone for fostering cohesion<\/strong>, commitment and communication, essential to build trust and ensure a smooth succession process.
