According to the definition of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurosif.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Sustainable Investment Forum (EUROSIF)<\/a>, \u201cresponsible investors take into consideration the long-term influence of extra financial factors such as environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues in their investment and governance decision-making. They integrate ESG factors with traditional financial analysis in their portfolio analysis and engagement activity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">The growth of this sector in the last decade has been staggering: by 2009, responsible investors managed more than $3 trillion in the United States and $5 trillion in Europe. The number of signatories of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unpri.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment<\/a>\u00a0had grown from 100 funds in 2005 to 800 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><em>Supported by a five-year grant of the <a href=\"http:\/\/erc.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Research Council<\/a> (ERC), Prof. Ferraro explores the emergence of responsible investing in mainstream financial markets. The project \u201cThe role of technology, models and metrics in the socially responsible investing field\u201d aims to study how institutional investors, asset managers, and the whole financial sector gradually integrates environmental, social and governance factors in their investment process.
