IESE STUDENTS VISIT SAO PAULO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On August 29, 2016, the IESE Full Time and Executive MBA\u00b4s got a deep dive into doing business in South America at the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/mba.iese.edu\/program\/curriculum-content\/year-2\/overseas-modules\/\">S\u00e3o Paulo overseas module course<\/a><\/strong>. This year\u00b4s module was the most interesting yet as it took place during a very interesting time in the history of the country.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\">&#8220;The module was conducted during one of the most interesting weeks in recent Brazilian history: The final vote of (former) President Dilma Rousseff&#8217;s impeachment happened during the module. \u00a0This event provided a particularly interesting backdrop against which to discuss the challenges of doing business in Brazil.&#8221; said <\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri, sans-serif\"><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.iese.edu\/en\/faculty-research\/professors\/faculty-directory\/paulo-rocha-e-oliveira\/\">Professor Paulo Rocha e Oliveira<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\">, <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\">Sr. Lecturer of Marketing and Production, Technology and Operations Management in IESE and the driver behind the S\u00e3o Paulo module.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Overseas modules are IESE elective classes for 2nd year students taught in our New York or S\u00e3o Paulo campuses in the fall term. In the spring term, students can enjoy similar electives in Shanghai or Nairobi. The modules can last up to two weeks depending on what courses you decide to take. Students had access to two classes: <strong>Business in Brazil and Marketing in Latin America.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1703 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"SP\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>In the <strong>Business in Brazil course,<\/strong> students addressed the answer to the question &#8211; \u00a0Is Brazil an attractive place for business? Students were\u00a0given the tools and\u00a0resources to answer whatever variation of this question most interested them. Should my\u00a0company sell our products in the Brazilian market? Should I start a company in Brazil?\u00a0Could I have a successful career as an executive in a Brazilian company? Should my\u00a0company buy from Brazilian suppliers? These are just some of the questions students were asking themselves and their classmates.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Marketing in Latin America<\/strong> course focused on some of the misbeliefs around marketing across countries in the region\u00a0as many assume they have more in common than they really do.<\/p>\n<p>The course was aimed at students who wanted to develop skills in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Developing brands and launching new products and services adapted to local \/ regional needs<\/li>\n<li>Understanding cultural differences and market connotations of adopting regional strategies.<\/li>\n<li>Challenging the myths of emerging market customers and consumers<\/li>\n<li>Developing and implementing successful demand generation strategies<\/li>\n<li>Adapting business models and going to market strategies to an environment where informal business has an important participation<\/li>\n<li>Marketing of talent &#8211; addressing the cultural and business impact of sports marketing and analyzing the viability for marketing initiatives in this context<\/li>\n<li>Identifying the challenges of Latin American companies seeking to develop and capture opportunities beyond their region and or country of origin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the <strong>second week<\/strong>, students had the opportunity to actually have some hands on experience by participating in the <strong>IESE Brazil Field Project<\/strong>. \u00a0The<strong> IESE Brazil Field Project<\/strong> consists of <strong>hands-on consulting projects<\/strong> in which MBA\u00a0students have the opportunity to work in small teams with Brazil-based busine<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1704 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP2-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"SP2\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP2-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/mba\/files\/2016\/09\/SP2.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ss leaders.\u00a0The student teams help solve problems that Brazilian companies are facing with the\u00a0ultimate objective of recommending new solutions that will be implemented to make a actual\u00a0difference in the companies.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Rocha explained to us the types of projects the students worked on this year along with the most recent innovations to the program.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\">&#8220;<em>The\u00a0Brazil Projects module continued the trend of mixing NGO\/Social projects with projects in for-profit companies. \u00a0The highlights were the Embraer project, in which students got to visit an airplane production line and advise the company on strategic issues concerning their innovation policy and the social project and Instituto Semear, in which the IESE student team helped that organization become more effective in helping low-income students attend university.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\"><em>The most successful innovation to the module was in the way the company visits were structured. \u00a0Students visited the companies in small groups, and their hosts at the companies were (mostly) IESE<\/em> <em>alumni. Students got to choose the company they wanted to visit, ensuring a good fit with their interests.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Second Year student, Larissa Campos dos Santos and Brazilian national, got a lot from the module even though she is from Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: black\">&#8220;The module was super interesting! During the first week, we got the chance to visit a couple\u00a0of companies that are doing a great job in Brazil and also hear speeches\u00a0from experts in many different topics. In the second week, we did a project for a company, in my case, was Embraer.\u00a0It was\u00a0fun not only to do the project, but also to be inside the company and visit their production line! &#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to experience the Sao Paulo moduel for yourself?
