From my application essays to my interviews, sustainability was a central part of the story I wanted to build during my MBA. I wasn’t simply looking for electives or credentials. I wanted opportunities that would help me understand how sustainability is implemented in practice and how businesses can create meaningful impact.

As I approached my second year, I knew I wanted to pursue an internship in sustainability. Being in Europe felt like a unique opportunity. The EU has become a global leader in sustainability, particularly through its regulatory frameworks and efforts to advance the ESG agenda. I wanted hands-on experience that would allow me to learn from that environment and deepen my understanding of how organizations integrate sustainability into their operations.

The search, however, was not always straightforward.

Like many international students, I faced challenges around visa sponsorship, language requirements, and highly specific job descriptions. I explored opportunities through IESE Career Forums, applying to both corporates and startups with sustainability-focused roles. There were moments when the process felt discouraging, but I remained committed to finding an opportunity aligned with my goals.

That opportunity eventually came through IESE’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership (ISL).

Taking a Chance

I first came across the opportunity through our online job board. I was already familiar with ISL from my research before joining IESE and had always hoped to become involved.

Initially, I hesitated to apply. The position indicated a preference for Spanish speakers, and at the time I was still learning the language through IESE’s BSP program. But after months of applications, I decided it was worth taking a chance.

As it turned out, several aspects of my background aligned closely with the role. My previous experience in sustainability consulting, particularly in sustainability reporting, proved relevant. My exposure to real estate and infrastructure also connected naturally to the hospitality industry. Even my undergraduate degree in computer engineering, which I hadn’t expected to draw on during my MBA, became an advantage.

The interview process was both challenging and enjoyable. At one point, I was asked to describe Barcelona in Spanish as a quick test of whether I could manage basic communication during the internship. Despite my limited fluency, the conversation went well, and about a week later I received the offer.

Building an AI Solution for Sustainability Reporting

My internship focused on a project with Barceló Hotel Group that sat at the intersection of sustainability, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.

The first few weeks involved immersing myself in the company’s sustainability reporting framework. This meant reviewing extensive internal documentation, much of it in Spanish, and understanding how sustainability data was collected, managed, and reported across the organization.

Working alongside both the Barceló team and sustainability consultancy Transcendent, we explored how AI could support sustainability reporting processes and improve the efficiency of data collection and analysis.

Our work began by identifying parts of the existing impact framework that could be piloted within Spanish hotels before eventually scaling more broadly. This required us to:

Map sustainability indicators and identify the required data points

Understand data ownership and governance processes

Review and refine underlying methodologies and calculations

Define the scope and limitations of the proposed AI solution

As the project evolved, I became increasingly involved in building and testing an AI-enabled reporting agent.

This was entirely new territory for me. While I had an engineering background, I had never built an AI solution before. Yet that challenge became one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.

Throughout the summer, we worked through multiple iterations, addressing familiar AI challenges such as hallucinations and inconsistent outputs. By the time the team returned after the summer holidays, we had developed a functional prototype that demonstrated the potential of applying AI to sustainability reporting.

Although there was still work to be done, the project established a strong foundation for future development.

Discovering a New Career Interest

One of the highlights of the fellowship was the opportunity to present our work directly to the Barceló Hotel Group team in Mallorca.

Beyond the technical outcomes, the experience gave me something even more valuable: a clearer sense of where my interests are evolving.

Before the internship, I was already passionate about sustainability. What I did not fully anticipate was how interested I would become in the intersection between sustainability and emerging technologies. I had previously supported digital sustainability transformation work at EY, but this internship was the first time I was responsible for creating the digital tool myself rather than just supporting its execution. The project showed me how digital tools, particularly AI, can help organizations tackle complex sustainability challenges in practical and scalable ways.

The project showed me how digital tools, particularly AI, can help organizations tackle complex sustainability challenges in practical and scalable ways. It transformed an abstract interest into a tangible career direction.

The relationships I built throughout the experience were equally meaningful. I had the opportunity to collaborate with professionals from Barceló, Transcendent, and ISL, all of whom generously shared their expertise and guidance. I am particularly grateful to Fabrizio, Fernanda, Maxime, Lorenzo, and Belén for their support throughout the project.

The fellowship concluded with an opportunity to present our work at the ISL CSO Circle, where sustainability leaders from multiple organizations came together to discuss emerging challenges and opportunities. Given the growing importance of both AI and sustainability across industries, it felt like a fitting way to conclude the experience.

Advice for Future Students

If there is one lesson I would share with students interested in sustainability, it is this: take advantage of the opportunities around you, even when they seem slightly out of reach.

Many students hesitate because they do not meet every requirement listed in a job description. My experience taught me that this should not always be a barrier. If you have the core skills, genuine interest, and willingness to learn, it is often worth applying.

The sustainability field is also incredibly broad. Some professionals build breadth by developing strong business foundations in areas such as strategy, operations, or finance and then applying those skills to sustainability challenges. Others choose to specialize deeply in areas such as circular economy, decarbonization, or sustainable finance.

Neither path is inherently better, and you may even do a combination of both over time. The key is to be intentional about whether you are currently building breadth or depth, and to understand how each experience contributes to your longer-term story.

For me, the MBA has been a process of exploration. Through this internship and my sustainability electives, I have discovered a growing interest in the intersection of sustainability and digital transformation, as well as areas such as circular economy and “hard-to-abate” sectors. These are spaces where the challenges are complex, the trade-offs are real, and innovation can create meaningful impact.

Most importantly, I have learned that careers in sustainability are rarely linear.

There will be moments when the path feels uncertain, and not every role will fit perfectly into a predefined plan. What matters is how each experience contributes to your broader purpose and helps you continue moving toward the impact you hope to create. There are many ways to contribute to sustainability, even from within traditional roles, by advocating for better practices and integrating sustainability into decision-making.

Looking back, the ISL and Barceló experience was far more than an internship. It was an opportunity to test new skills, gain confidence in unfamiliar territory, and discover a new intersection of interests that I hope to continue exploring long after my MBA.

Written by Rijuta Kulkarni, MBA Class of 2026

Pursue your dream MBA!
