And what better way to discover this wonderful spot on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea than running – or footing (as they say in Spanish)?

Considered by many as one of the liveliest places in Europe, Barcelona offers a wide range of places to run while at the same time getting some fresh air. From the beach and its surroundings to the beautiful hills of Tibidabo or Montjuïc, this picturesque Spanish city caters for all sorts of runners and distances.

I personally run between 8 and 10 km on a weekday basis and usually run a bit more, around 14 km, on weekends when I have more time. For some people this may be a lot (or not that much!), but believe me it is not. Running large distances, like many other things in life, is just a matter of practice and self-determination. If you are not used to it, my advice is to start off with a 20 minute run and over a few weeks work up to an hour, which should even out at about 10 km. Here’s a selection of four of my favorite routes for you to try out when you’re next over.

From Barceloneta to the Beach

Distance: 9 km

Since the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona’s beachfront has become a haven for those who enjoy swimming, sunbathing, running or simply relaxing. This route covers the largest part of the beach area, from the famous Barceloneta to the newer and yet to be discovered Diagonal Mar area.

Carretera de les Aigües

Distance: 10 km

Located just outside the city center and easily accessible, the Carretera de les Aigües is the perfect spot for runners, bike riders or photographers looking for breathtaking views of the city.
