The Metaverse promises to revolutionize the digital world. Over the next decade we are poised to see a complete transformation in how business interacts with customers, how work is done, how organizations operate, what products and services are offered and how they are distributed. The Metaverse is expected to shake up the value functions of companies in just about every industry, from consumer products to education, to health care, to entertainment, to banking, to payment systems. New marketplaces, industries and resources will emerge, as will new professions and skillsets.
Business leaders need to understand what the Metaverse is, as well as the groundbreaking opportunities and risks it presents. Gartner defines it as an example of combinatorial innovation that requires multiple technologies and trends, such as augmented reality (AR), flexible work styles, head-mounted displays (HMDs), an AR cloud, the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, artificial intelligence (AI) and spatial technologies, to form a complete Metaverse. As most of the components of the Metaverse already exist, what is rapidly going mainstream is how all these features are integrated.
