However you must achieve three things in order to powerfully support the verbal message of your speech.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sandylinverinc.com\/\">Sandy Linver<\/a> in her book \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0671893165?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=conor-neill-iese-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0671893165\">Speak and Get Results<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=conor-neill-iese-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0671893165\" alt=\"\" width=\"0\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" \/>\u201d outlines the three areas: you must transmit authority, energy and audience awareness.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Authority<\/strong> is that you look and sound like you have something to say about the subject.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy<\/strong> is that you look like the subject is important to you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Audience awareness<\/strong> is that you have an interaction with the audience members so that they feel part of the experience of your speech.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Authority<\/h1>\n<p>How do you transmit <b>authority<\/b>? There are three ways that your body language or non-verbal language can signal authority to the audience:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Visual image<\/b> \u2013 The clothes you chose to wear at 7 this morning will have a big impact on how your audience judge you.\u00a0 Do you look like they would expect an \u201cexpert\u201d on this topic to look?\u00a0 If you are speaking to a business audience about business, you should look the part.\u00a0 If you are speaking about social media and web 2.0 perhaps you can look somewhat different.\u00a0 If you are speaking to greenpeace or a local labour movement, a suit might create the wrong first impression.<\/li>\n<li><b>Body image<\/b> \u2013 feet shoulder width apart, body balanced, gestures supporting the key moments of the speech, any walking during pauses \u2013 key being that there is nothing that is distracting the audience from being able to engage with your message (don\u2019t look like you are about to fall over, like you have an intense interest in the keys in your pocket)<\/li>\n<li><b>Voice <\/b>\u2013 There are five characteristics of a powerful voice<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Breathing <\/b>\u2013 relaxed deep breaths give you projection and power<\/li>\n<li><b>Articulation <\/b>\u2013 open your mouth and clearly pronounce the words, no mumbling and no \u201cfiller words\u201d (um, ah, em, like)<\/li>\n<li><b>Downward inflection<\/b> \u2013 In all human languages we signal answers by terminating the statement with downward inflection \u2013 we signal questions by finishing the phrase with a raised tone.\u00a0 Many times nerves will drive you to say \u201cIESE is the best business school in the world\u201d with a upward tilt in tone on the \u201cworld\u201d turning it into \u201cIESE is the best business school in the world?\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><b>Pauses <\/b>\u2013 Include 3-8 second pauses at key moments \u2013 just before key statements or just after a story \u2013 this really brings the audience into the speech.<\/li>\n<li><b>Projection and resonance<\/b> \u2013 make sure you are using your whole diaphram \u2013 the chest and lungs as well as mouth and nose \u2013 can you feel the vibrations coming from your chest and your sternum vibrating?\u00a0 A voice that comes from the chest rather than a voice that vibrates in the nose reaches the back of the room and transmits powerfully.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Energy<\/h1>\n<p>Simple \u2013 you just need to look like you care about the subject that you are speaking about.\u00a0 If the speaker doesn\u2019t look like this is a subject of great importance, it will be impossible for the audience to engage the subject with any sort of passion.<\/p>\n<h1><b>Audience Awareness<\/b><\/h1>\n<p>There is a huge about of communciation coming back to the speaker during the speech.\u00a0 You can see whether people are engaged or not.\u00a0 You can hear when there are distractions or areas of the audience that have lost engagement and are having side conversations.\u00a0 Usually a quick glance in the direction of the distracion, or simply pausing your speech until the audience re-engages can be a very powerful method to show that you are 100% physically there in the room and that the audience matter to you.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is no simple rules for how you should stand, have your hands, look, or dress when you give a speech.
