The Transparency International Liaison Office to the EU welcomes the launch of a new site entitled the ‘Transparency Portal’ by the European Commission as another step in the direction towards greater transparency. The website provides a central entry point to access information that will facilitate informed participation by citizens in the EU decision-making process. However, this ease of access needs to be matched by continued improvements in the quantity and quality of the information provided.
Jana Mittermaier, the Director of the Transparency International EU Office said “the website will help the citizens to access relevant information in a more user-friendly manner. However, we call on the Commission to continue improving access to EU documents, the transparency in the spending of EU funds (for example the naming of all beneficiaries), and transparency in expert groups.”
In recent years the European Commission has improved its track record of transparency and we welcome this new ‘one stop shop’ for information and look forward to further developments in the future.
The site is available to view here.
