Biography
Carles Vergara-Alert is Professor of Finance at IESE Business School and holder of the Banco Sabadell Chair in Business and Sustainability. During the 2026–2027 academic year, he is visiting the MIT Center for Real Estate. He was a Visiting Professor of Real Estate Finance at the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business.
His research examines how major technological and environmental transformations reshape real assets, infrastructure, cities, and financial markets. His current work studies the economics and financing of data centers and digital infrastructure, climate risk and credit markets, housing and household finance, and the effects of changes in the built environment on firms, households, and local economies.
His research has been published in leading finance and real estate journals, and presented in conferences including the AFA, EFA, WFA, AEA, NBER, CEPR, and AREUEA annual meetings. He holds a PhD in Finance and a Master of Financial Engineering from UC Berkeley, as well as degrees in Civil Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.
