Today, we are humbled and honored to chat with our MiM Alumni, Ava Chris Putty Franklin, whose hometown is Chennai, India, and who graduated from MiM’24 last June. We were fortunate to have her at IESE’s Madrid Campus for 11 months. Ava is currently making strides as a Project Manager at Group Central TMO, Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, based in Casablanca.
So Ava, thank you for this chat in the first place, you are always willing to help, thanks for that. Can you share a bit about your journey from Chennai – India to IESE MiM in Madrid? You once described yourself as an ordinary girl with extraordinary dreams, determined to leave behind a legacy of impact and change…. are you closer to your dreams?
All my life, I lived in Chennai until I moved to Madrid to pursue my dreams. During my bachelors at Stella Maris College, I interned with Nestlé, where I saw firsthand how the FMCG world works. After completing my education, I joined McKinsey as a Research Analyst, exploring various industries, including consumer goods, banking, telecom, and sustainability.
Through these experiences, I gained valuable insights into the business world and realized my passion still lay in the consumer goods industry. I knew that pursuing the MiM at IESE would be the best option to deepen my understanding of different functions within a business. The MiM’s rigorous academic program and focus on the case method were game changers, allowing me to engage with real-world challenges. Additionally, the diverse international community of peers and professors provided invaluable networking opportunities and insights into global business practices.
Now, as a Project Manager at Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, I can see how IESE has helped me get closer to achieving my dreams and will always be grateful for that!
Can you mention something that surprised you about IESE?
Well, one thing that surprised me about IESE is the depth of personal attention and support provided by the faculty and staff. I was pleasantly surprised by how accessible and dedicated the professors and administrators were to each student’s success. Whether it was seeking guidance on coursework, career advice, or personal development, I always felt supported and valued as an individual. This level of personalized attention truly exceeded my expectations and contributed immensely to my positive experience at IESE.
Hey Ava, just out of curiosity, why did you choose IESE?
I chose IESE because of its renowned case methodology and incredible alumni network. The emphasis on practical learning through real-world cases resonated with me, as I believed it was the most effective way to grasp complex business concepts. Moreover, knowing that there was a strong community of alumni always willing to support and guide students like me was a major factor in my decision. Having access to such a valuable network of experienced professionals gave me confidence in my choice to attend IESE.
We take great pride in the Case methodology at IESE, but with your own words, what do you think makes the case method so attractive as a means to learn and become a better manager?
The case method is attractive because it puts us right in the action. Instead of just reading about business challenges, we get to tackle them head-on, just like we would in the real world. It’s like learning to swim by jumping into the pool—it’s hands-on, practical, and helps us wear the hat of a manager in the safety of a classroom, about at least 300 times during the course!
What was it like to study in Madrid? Would you highlight any aspects of it?
My favorite part of Madrid was taking a leisurely stroll around Almudena and the Royal Palace in the evenings. There’s something magical about the bustling streets, the enchanting architecture, and the vibrant atmosphere that makes every walk feel like a special experience. Additionally, Madrid has provided me with incredible opportunities to explore other countries. From weekend getaways to nearby cities to longer trips across Europe, I’ve had the chance to immerse myself in different cultures, broaden my perspectives, and build valuable connections along the way. Whether it’s for leisure or professional networking, Madrid’s strategic location has truly enriched my MiM experience.
What advice would you give to help potential applicants gain admission into the IESE MiM program?
My advice for potential applicants is to start early and approach the application process strategically. Research the school thoroughly to ensure it aligns with your goals, values, and learning style. Take the time to reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and experiences, and craft a compelling narrative that highlights your unique qualities and contributions. Seek feedback from mentors, admissions professionals, and current students to refine your application materials and ensure they are polished and authentic. Finally, demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and passion for the program in your essays and interviews, and showcase how you will contribute to the school’s community and culture. Always remember to stay resilient and persevere through any setbacks, and trust in your abilities and the value you will bring to the program.
As we come to the close of our inspiring conversation, I’d like to ask one final question, Ava. What advice would you offer to young women who aspire to pursue a career in management, especially those considering the transformative experience of an international education like the MiM?
For young women aspiring towards a career in management, having a clear vision for your life is crucial! Embrace your dreams and don’t worry about the judgments of others; the path you choose is yours alone. Remember that your family may have their expectations, but it’s important to carve out your own journey. Believe in yourself and your abilities, even when faced with challenges or doubt. Surround yourself with supportive people who uplift you, including family and friends, as their encouragement can be invaluable. Trust that your unique perspective adds value to both your career and your family’s legacy. Stay focused on your goals and don’t hesitate to take bold steps toward them. The journey may not always be easy, but every effort you make brings you closer to your vision. Keep pushing forward, because with determination and self-belief, you have the power to create a fulfilling and impactful career that resonates with your values and dreams.
As we conclude, it’s clear that Ava Chris Putty Franklin is the kind of person who not only excels in her career but also inspires those around her. Her dedication, leadership, and vision make the world a better place, and we are proud to count her among our MiM alumni. Thank you so much Ava!
