Human Resource Management (MBA & EMBA programs)

Motivating people to dedicate their effort in a meaningful way is the most fundamental raison d’être for any organization. After all, who is going to use your products and services if you can’t understand and satisfy your customer needs? And without the right talent, who is going to make sure you will? But what is the right talent for your organization, and how do you select, manage, retain and help it grow to sustain a competitive edge in the market? This is the key question this course will address.  Specifically, the course takes a systemic, strategic, generalist, and global perspective to the management of people in organizations.

Global Leadership (MBA, GEMBA and Open Executive Education programs)

In the past, the international arena used to be exclusively the domain of large multinational companies. However, even many smaller companies are now operating across geographic, economic, political and cultural boundaries. In this context, it is common for leaders to coordinate activities with colleagues in different countries, travel intensively to visit international business partners, negotiate contracts with suppliers or clients of different cultural backgrounds, introduce a management system into a different socio-cultural context, and lead an increasingly diverse workforce.

The course aims to assist participants to more effectively lead in a global context. We will discuss how to understand, deal with and lead people from diverse cultural backgrounds, how to lead effectively when you are physically not there, how to effectively bridge cultural, geographical, and time zone differences in global teams, and how to reflect about yourself as a leader in order to better deal with cultural diversity

Leading Organizations (GMP and AMP programs)

Developing and practicing the right leadership skills is crucial not only for exceling in business but in any form of human collaboration. We are fortunate to be able to draw on decades of research by seminal psychologists, sociologists, and economists to understand the human mind, emotions, and behavior. This course will pair these scientific insights with a range of case examples of senior decision-makers and their organizations to help participants make high-quality leadership decisions.

Decision-makers often need to navigate challenging, complex and ambiguous situations, so there is no simple, universal formula for achieving leadership effectiveness. Instead, taking critical leadership decisions requires a deep awareness and analysis of the issues and context at hand, careful deliberation and judgment despite incomplete information, critical reflection on the possible courses of action, and empathy towards the constituents that will be impacted by the decision. Throughout the course, we will enact these meta-competencies as we discuss case studies, reflect on our own leadership experience, and consider how we can grow as leaders in our personal and professional lives.
